Need help with Scope Mounting
« on: July 14, 2003, 09:35:28 AM »
I'll go ahead and admit I'm a novice and have never mounted a scope   , so any advice yall can give me would be great.

I own a 8mm Mauser bolt action rifle.  It already has a Pacific Deluxe??? scope mounted on it.   I've never gotten decent paterns with it, so I recently purchased a Leupold 3x9x50 VariX II.
What will I need to purchase to properly mount the Leupold scope?
I'm pretty handy, but is this sometrhing I should let a gunsmith handle or is it something I can handle.  Thanks  DD

Uuuummmm----just because you have a new scope---it doesn't mean your groups will be any better.

Could be a loose mount---a poor shooting rifle----or ammo problems-----there is a lot more to accuracy than optics---although a good scope won't hurt---don't expect miracles either.

Also---with a military rifle----since you have never done it before---I would let a gunsmith work on it.

If you had a commercial sporter---it would be a completely different story----and you could easily do it yourself.

Well I started tinkering with it,  took the old scope off and found it would have been an easy mount,  except that the rings are placed too far apart for the Leupold scope.  The Pacific scope was a 3x9x40 and had more room for the rings to be mounted.  The Leupold scope appears to be a couple mm's too short, and starts to expand into the Objective Bell  before the front ring can be attached.  The mount doesn't appear to be adjustable.  Anything I can do????

You may be able to turn one of the scope bases around if you have a two piece base and the hole spacing is not centered on the base. Failing this you may be able to buy extension rings to fit the base. This will shorten the mounting distance. This will of course depend on the brand of rings and bases you already have.
Tight lines, straight shooting!
