need help with 270 WSM

It could be any number of reasons.

Check the scope mounts - they might be loose and the scope is slipping.  Make sure that blue loctite is used.

Check the scope - Although the scope is his favorite (and Nikon is also one of my favorites) maybe something happened to the scope internally.  I have NEVER had ANY problems with Nikons, but maybe something happened to his.

Check the gun - Check the crown.  Are there any burrs in the muzzle?  Check in inside of the barrel - are there any burrs in there?

What kind of groups did he get before the problems?  Were the groups consistent.  (It is true that some guns like different bullets better than others, but I think that your problem may be something else.)  In either case, try to use other bullets and see what happens.

The best thing to do is give it to a competent gunsmith - or better yet, send it back to Winchester and see what they say.  Tell them that the gun is defective and dangerous.  See what they do.

BTW, you said a "270 Ultra Mag."  Is there such a thing?  :?  I haven't heard about this.

Did you check the action mounting screws on the stock?  I've heard many stories lately that report finger tight action screws were found on many new guns.

Torch,

My brother recently purchased a Winchester M70 Classic Stainless in .300 WSM.  He does not handload, but I am curious as to what load is a real tack driver in your .300 WSM?

There are not a great amount of choices in factory ammo in the .300WSM (due to the fact that it is still a relatively new round).  I didn't get him the 150 Ballistic Tip because that bullet is too fragile at close range.  I didn't get him the 180 Fail Safe because that is too strong and will not fully expand on a whitetail deer.  As such, I got him the 180 grain Winchester Power Points.  I don't particularly like these bullets, but these seem to be the better choice of the three (again, 180 grain bullets are too big for whitetails, and I would prefer something like a 165 grain hornady interlock or 165 grain trophy bonded).

I was just curious to see what load you use.  Thanks.

I contacted Federal Catridge yesterday.  I told them that it would be a good idea if they loaded the 300 WSM with Nosler Partitions.  They said that their TBs and Speer Grand Slams were better and were not going to extend the Partitions at this time because there was no demand for it.  Go figure.  No demand for Partitions?  Sounds hard to be true.  The Nosler Partition, although not as "Premium" as the TBs and Swift A-Frames, is still the measure by which all others are judged.  Plus, the partitions shoot flatter than the TBs.  Federal said that this year they are making the TBs more aerodynamic by making the tip sharper.

I also asked if Federal was going to have a 270 WSM load.  They said there was not a demand for it.  You've got to be kidding me.  I asked him if Federal knew that REMINGTON even has a load for ITS COMPETITION the 270 WSM (in fact, Remington does - its a 130 grain PSPCL in .270 WSM).  He was surprised and took it straight to the Engineering department.  So I guess maybe next year Federal will have a load for the .270 WSM, although he said that it would likely be a TB rather than a partition.

I have a Abolt 270WSM.  It's a stalker with Leupold rings and mounts.  The scope is a Zeiss 3.5X10X44.

This setup produces great groups a 100 yards with factory Winchester Supreme 130gr BT.

I will be reloading for the gun so hope to improve.

I would try another scope and rings/bases and see if that helps.

Personally, I am not very fond of the ballistic tips in the Winchester ammo.  First, I don't like ballistic tips because they expand too violently.  Second, the winchester ammo with the ballistic tips has a moly-type coating.  Professional gunsmiths don't like this coating, and I don't either.  They say that, if you use bullets with this coating, you need to keep on shooting it.  Otherwise, if you use non-coated bullets, the accuracy will suffer.  Additionally, I have heard that cleaning is more difficult.

Hardly

You say your friend is a good shooter.  That being the case, as he pulled his hair out I'm sure he checked for all the obvious stuff.

Hmmm, leme see, any commonality here?  Ahhhh yup, BROWNING.  Bet a dollars worth a jelly doughnuts it's plain just the gun.

Why am I so adamant about it?  Well quite frankly I'm a little more than pissed at what we buy for quality these days from the major gun builders. Nobody in the market for a new rifle should have to grit their teeth when they lay down the froggies for a new rifle.  Will it shoot, or will it group like a shotgun?

I got burned with a Remington Sendero a few years back.  By all laws of logic, that gun should have shot into one ragged hole at a hundred.  It had everything going for it.  Best I could get out of it with factory OR my best handloads was right about a 3 inch group.

What was wrong with it?  Hell, I don't know. But I took the attitude that it was junk and dumped it, at a loss of course.  Sure, I could have sent it back to Remington, and got jerked around, waited 6 months to get it back and start over.  All ammo of course at MY expense.  Nah, keep it.  They couldn't get it right the first time, I doubt they will 2nd time around.

OK, so I'm the consumer from Hell, but I reserve that right as I am a paying customer.

They ain't 100% all bad.  I have a BLR in 308 that I can't find a SINGLE thing wrong with, and it shoots.  If you got 3 good ones in a row you might consider playing the lottery

I have 2 Browning A-Bolts (the original versions, not the newer A-Bolts IIs) in .270 Winchester and 7mm Rem. Mag.  With Federal ammo with Sierra Boat-Tails, these guns shoot well under 1 inch at 100.  I have been told that the older Browning A-Bolts like mine are better than the newer version.  I don't know since I don't own the newer ones, but I'm happy with mine.  Then again, it seems that all of my rifles shoot 1 inch or better.  This group includes Remington 700 in BDL SS and Sendero SF, Winchester M70 Classic Stainless, and Tikka Stainless.  Am I just lucky?  I don't know, but I'm happy.

I for one am not going to say that Brownings are "The Best" but I find them hard to beat.  I own 5 Abolts and in my hunting club most of our members use brownings.  I know I'm safe in saying at least 15 abolts are used between our 24 members.  Out of all this we had one person that had a problem and it wasn't accuracy.

For some reason the shell would be hard to cycle after a round was fired. The gun was shipped back and Browning sent it back in just a few weeks.  The gun shoots great now.

Matter of fact we have a fellow in our club that is a Wetherby fan and told us that Browning could never hold with one.  Me and another member went to the range with him and thought him a lesson.  He spent big bucks on bedding, free floating, trigger job and various things but still couldn't group as well as my FACTORY abolt.

Until I find a better gun for the money I'll be buying Abolts!!!

brdavis,

Just out of curiosity, what differences do you find, if any, between the original A-Bolts and the newer A-Bolt IIs?  I have been told that the original A-Bolts are better than the newer ones.  Any thought?

Zach,
I can't offer any details on shooting diffence because all mine are Abolt II.  I do think the II is abit lighter which I like but the added weight my produce a better shooter.  I have been told that the Abolt shot better but I have no proff from the bench.

I can say that I haven't had a Browning to let me down.  I must admit I have become bitten by the Browning bug because all my purchases on long guns have been Browning.  I traded off my Ruger and Remington (thought I would never get rid of my Remington) to buy Brownings.

I hope to have a complete collection soon.  Here what I have so far.

Browning Centori White Lightning 12 guage
Browning Abolt II 270WSM
Browning Abolt II 7 Mag
Browning Abolt II 7mm-08
Browning Abolt II 308
Browning Abolt II 270
Browning BAR 308
Browning Buckmark

Hope to add...
Centori in 20 guage
Gold 12 guage
Upland Special (20 guage)

OK, while we're talking about accuracy I'll throw in my $.02 worth.

I've got 4 long guns and 3 shoot 1/2" consistantly.  The ones that shoots 1/2" are:

Kleingunther K15 in 7mm Rem Mag

Winchester M70 Classic in 264 Win Mag

Savage 16LZ in 7.82 Lazzeroni

The only one that doesn't shoot 1/2" is my Browing Abolt in 270 Winchester.  Still, it consistently shoots 1".

I have never had anything done to any of these, they are all straight out of the box.

I had some problems with the firing pin of the Abolt when I got it and clicked on a couple of good deer when I first got it, so I sort of lost confidence in it.  Maybe that's why it doesn't shoot as well as the others.  It has been retired to my son's use.

I just got the Savage this year and have been pretty impressed with it.  I have the opportunity for some really long shots hence the Lazzernoi caliber.  It has performed beyond my expectations, and it wasn't too pricey either.  Don't like the trigger though.  Will probalby replace next year.

My preference at this time is:

1)  Savage
2)  Kleingunther
3)  Winchester
4)  Browning

brdavis,

I don't own a Browning Gold, but I have been told by about 4 different gunsmiths that the 3.5" version of their Gold Models have problems.  Apparently the 3.5" version was just an extension of their 3" version and, as such, there is too much stress in the action and its parts.  Again,  I don't have any personal experience with them, but I just wanted to let you know.

However, I do have a Benelli Super Black Eagle in 3.5" and a Beretta Xtrema in 3.5"  Both are super!  Never let me down.  Never jammed.  Never ANY problems.

The only 2 Browning shotguns I have owned are 1) citori U/o and 2) 10 gauge BPS Magnum stalker.  Never any problems with these either.

Yes, I know that this is the Bolt Action Rifles section, but I just wanted to briefly mention this in passing.  (Plus, I AM the moderator. :)
