Red Dot on a 22 A
« on: July 14, 2007, 04:35:53 PM »

I just bought a new 22A that had a 4 X scope on it. I am sure it never was fired and the paperwork was left in the factory case. So for all intents and purposes it is a new gun. Now I have a 308 Encore with a 2 X on it and I can shoot that fine and I used to have a Ruger Government with a 2X Burris on it that I could shoot fine too. That 4 X just does not cut it for off hand and plinking. It may be fine for sandbagging but not anything else just too much magnification in my opinion. So it came off and I put it on a Milsurp that had a scout mount on it that was beggging for a new scope. The 22 A got a red dot I had hanging around. Now I am not a huge red dot fan. I have one on a scatter gun I like and I have had them on other things I always preferred the precision of a scope over the red dot. Still for plinking and close up target work I think the red dot ought to be ok. The jury may be out on that I guess until I try it. It has to be better than that 4X. At least to me as on a pistol I like 2 X anything else I just think is too much. I got an excellent deal on the pistol scope combo with the scope box and papers and same with the pistol the factory box and all the paper work. I am positive the gun was bought and the scope put on and returned. Reason I heard from a friend of mine who works at the gun shop was the guy bought it and brought it back seems his wife gave him an ultimatum when she seen the gun either the gun or she and the kid. I know the choice I would have made.  I doubt he will have a life after caving in. I bet if he would have stood up to her it would have worked. She pushed him and it worked. So any one here use a red dot on your 22 A or any other 22 pistol and what do you think of that combo? Like I said I think a scope is more precise but I want something that is fast and still fairly accurate. I know that 4 X was not going to cut it and I cannot afford a 2 X at the moment.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I have used a red dot scope as you describe on a Buckmark and a High Standard in bullseye competition. I have also used this scope/pistol combination for small game. i agree the 4x is to much magnification for off hand hunting and plinking scenarios, for me. I have shot many thousands of round through this combination and it works well.

Glad to hear it cheese. I hear your area had an interesting fireworks display on the lake. Jim

I have one of the Burris Fast Fire "tubeless red dots" or reflex type sights on a 22A and with the right ammo it is a tack driver. I have it mounted over the original rear sight location and it is hardly more bulky than the original adjustable rear sight. I have a Dr. Optic on a .357 revolver and the Tasco Optimal 2000 on a .22 auto and love them all except that the cheap Tasco will not hold adjustment. They all are a bit of a PITA to zero but on a .22 the ammo is cheap enough that you don't mind spending most of a box to get zeroed. Several makers are now producing them and I see no reason to bother with a heavy, bulky tube sight. With the tubeless design mounted to the rear one can still use many standard holsters, perhaps with just a bit of modification, and the gun handles as well as with open sights.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

I've got a cheap BSA 30 from Wally World on a 22/45, MK III, that works great.  It may eat batteries more than some other units but it works fine for me at the ranges I shoot a pistol, which are generally short.  I know there are better, lighter, red dots, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money on one at first.  So far the BSA has worked out well.    I've even used it to kill a couple of squirrels with the 22/45.

I've got a Barska reflex sight on a Ruger Mark II Target. Choice of 4 reticules including a 2mm dot (my fave) Works great, less than $70.

Not a pistol, but (after getting the OK from their consumer support person) I put a very inexpensive NcSTAR red/green reflex sight on a Webley .22 air rifle. The dot is much larger than the small bullseye on a target, but by centering the bullseye in the dot, I have achieved excellent accuracy, shooting groups as small as 3/4" at 60'. Once I got the mounting screws tight, the serious airgun recoil didn't affect zero.
