RCBS Chargemaster question...
« on: April 25, 2008, 03:44:11 PM »
For you Chargemaster users, I have a quick question.

The last two evenings while loading I have noticed that after the set amount is thrown, the unit beeps, the round count then is displayed, then the charge weight of the
charge is displayed again. This is normal.

Here is the problem... Lets say we have a charge weight of 43.5. After it drops this and displays the correct amount with a stable indication, the round count shows, then the weight comes back at 43.6 or .7.

So it shows .1 or .2 over the first weight. it does not do this every time, but maybe once out four or so measures.

Anyone have any ideas? Tried calling RCBS this morning, but forgot they are closed on Fridays.

That's normal for stick powders, have seen it reported several times, the Lyman does the same thing, my cure is to set it for .1 gr less, then trickle the rest in if needed. The Lyman DPS III comes with a reducer bushing that solves the problem, but it also increases dispense time.  :'( Dunno is RCBS has a cure, so give em a call.

Mine don't do that. I did notice that if I have the window open behind me it messes with the scale!!!Even if it is  dead calm out. I always have the window shut when the scale comes on!

I have the same equipment and had the same problem, especially with the coarser powders. I think that when it is dispensing in a slow manner, you know what I mean, the bumping and stopping, and it is dropping a stick or two of powder at a time. Sometimes as it reaches the target weight, several sticks fall out, putting it over the target weight by a .1 grain or two. The dispenser is putting out very small amounts of powder and fools the scale into thinking it is at weight when actually it dispensed too much to put it on weight. It says it is OK and goes through the described routine and then comes back and says that it is over. I always go by the final shown weight. In other words if the final weight says I am over by .1 grains, then I dump it and start over. Tim's trick of setting it .1 grain low, works 95%+ of the time. Some times you are over by .2 grains, then you have to dump it or take some tweezers and pull enough out to get where you want it. You set it .1 too low and after it dispenses the powder and goes through it little routine and you are .1 over, you are at target, if it does not and is .1 grain short, then you tap the dispense tube with your finger for a kernel or two of powder until you reach the target weight. I use that method when dispensing coarse powders, I do not have that much of a problem with the finer cut/ball powders. I do not think there is a cure, the scale is feeding back to the disperser and it calls for just a little and a whole bunch falls out of the tube. I think it is the nature of the beast. Use Tim's method, it works. ;)

Never came across that problem...but like otheers, I set it to throw a light charge and then trickle in via a hand trickler to reach my desired charge as weighed on one of my balance beam scales.

Good points were brought up by all...

I will set it for .1 light and see how she acts.  I was working with Varget, and it's a bit course.

Thanks for the ideas.

The only time this happens is when I "bump" the table seating a bullet that the scale is on. I absolutely love this device.
