Need Help w/ Maverick 88 ejection problems
« on: May 14, 2008, 06:00:25 PM »
I am tring to figure out whats wrong with this older maverick 88. I bought it from a pawn shop and could tell it needed some work, but it was  dirt cheap. anyways, it loads the shell fine, but when you go to eject the shell, it remains held tight against the boltface. and then if you pull the bolt closed it will just push that same shell back into the barrel. never letting go of the shell.  it trys to load the next shell but it gets caught up by the shell trying to be extracted. any help would be great! thanks

when the bolt pulls the shell back to the rear of the action it is held by two little claws, when it reaches a certain point almost fully to the rear of its travel the shell rim should contact a a little metal ejector piece on the left side of the action that hits the rim and pushes it off the claws and out of the action. maybe the ejector piece is worn or bent or missing.im looking at a mossberg right now, but most pumps  work in a similar manner. let us know what happens.

is there a small cut on the face of the bolt where the ejector piece should protrude when the bolt is pulled back? Or is the ejector made into the wall of the receiver? If it's either of those two then something is wrong, because i see neither. I don't see anything on the wall of the receiver where the shell rim will make contact. Also, i see a notch cut into the face of the bolt where an ejector piece could come out at the last second, but nothing comes out. Could it be that this piece is broken? If so, how hard of a chore is that? I've been looking at part prices and they're not too bad. Thanks for the help! Anymore info is greatly appreciated!

ALSO i think this isn't the older style, it has 2 action working rods instead of 1. if that matters.

Might take this question over to the mossberg forum.  I gather from listening to them that none of their $150.00 shotguns ever misfires, period.  Perhaps they have some secret knowledge that the rest of us don't?

LOL, I hardly see this thing shooting properly let alone never a mis-fire! LOL To me this is just a project, I hunt w/ my Encore Pro-hunter.... that's my baby.  But when it come to pump action hunting i take my Nova out... I like it, it's a good value, but thanks for the advice, i'll ask them.

I may have found the problem, after looking at exploded views for parts, i think i found that i'm missing an ejector piece. that screws to the inside of the reciever.

If someone could take a picture of the inside of the receiver with the bolt in the open position it would help me greatly! Also, is the hole closest to the fore arm on the LEFT side of the receiver (Maverick 88 stamped side) is the hole open or does it have a screw or pin in it?

THANKS!

if you don't have a part that slots into the left side of the receiver and knocks the shell rim out of the claws at the time to eject then you prob are missing something.there should be a slot for it to fit in and a screw that holds it in.if its not present then just order it and the screw and yu should be bout ready to go. keep us posted..

i believe that's exactly what it is. after looking into the receiver for a while, i could picture how it should eject, but there was nothing making contact with the rim of the shell. then after looking a bit longer i could see what i thought was missing. and the screw is missing also.

my next question is, are they interchangeable with the Moss. 500? I actually saw this part and screw on an exploded view of a 500 and figured it would be the same for a Maverick 88. Now I just need to find this part from a company that sells it. thanks everyone!
