Gave it a try
« on: April 21, 2008, 10:56:22 AM »
Well after not finding much of any information on IMR4007, I decided to give it a try.  I was trying to get higher velocities, and I think this powder is just the ticket.

I was hitting around 2800 fps over 54.5 grains of IMR4007 with a 168 grn TSX in 30-06, 2750 with 53.5 grains

I tried cramming 63 grains of RL19 under the same bullet... (and when I say cram, I mean cram) and that only got me to the low 2700's.

The powder gave me good consistant velocities, even measured over my crappy bottom end chrony, probably the best consistencies I've seen.  So all in all, no more powder smashing, it is the SSC (super short cut) so it meters very well, and I feel like I could even step up if I wanted to a little more. (though I don't have a reason to)

I wasn't shooting where I could get a stable rest (out snowmachining the river bottoms) and didnt bring targets with me, so I can't quote accuracy yet.  But with the consistant velocities, I think it is going to work well.  When I get time, I will let you know how she hits.

Never heard of IMR 4007.

Must be new on the market.

Here you go .

IMR 4007 SSC
Super Short granulated powder with a burn speed that falls between 4320 and 4350. Ideally suited for varmint cartridges like the 220 Swift, 22-250 Remington and 243 Winchester. Additionally, well suited for the venerable 30-06, the 300 Winchester Short Magnum, and the Super Short Magnums 243 and 25 Winchester.

I originally went into SW to get some 4064 and some 4350....  they were out of both, and I saw the 4007, had read a couple articles about it, so thought, why not?

I guess many people up here hadn't heard of it either, it was one of the only powders they had fully stocked, not many people buying it.

CRAP!!!!

Another powder I gotta buy to try in the wifes 243WSSM. I've been trying to get something to work in this rifle. Maybe this is it. She won't consider selling it, so I might as well work with it some more.

The way it burns, seems to me like it would be great in the .243, especially larger deer loads.
