44-40
« on: May 15, 2008, 02:51:19 PM »
My Grandfather gave me a 44-40 back in the early 80's. His Father gave it to him. It was made by LaSabre. He thought it was used by the Spainards durning the S_Am War. Some thug stole it about 20 years ago. My question is... does anyone know anything about this gun & have you ever seen them available. I would love to replace it.

We ask not your council or arms.

May your chains sit lightly upon you.
and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen" - Samuel Adams

The Spanish government made copies of the Winchester M-92 to equip police forces, and they were carried for a long time, at least to WWII.  They appeared at times in trade, and are not unusual, though not common, in this country.  I have not heard anything about their metallurgy, as was a case with a number of the handguns that were produced in Spain.  Any mechanical weakness is due to the nature of the M-92 design, which was never meant to handle high pressures.  Heavily loaded 44-40's and rebarreled .44 Magnums have been known to fail in original M-92's made by Winchester.  I have hunted and taken game with a M-92 in .44-40 both with smokeless and with black powder.  There are any number of modern clones, and they are nice carrying, reliable weapons.   If you look long enough, you will probably find a replacement for your stolen rifle, or you can buy one of the newly made ones, with complete satisfaction and not a lot of money.

Can't be of much help.  In the last 45 years, the only Spanish copy of the 1892 that I have ever even heard of was the El Tigre.  Importers sold many through magazine ads in the 1950's and '60's.  My hunting partner has used one for a number of years.  Their quality might surprise you.  The Spanish copies of Colt and S&W handguns however is a very different issue.  They are wall hangers.
