Decoys
« on: May 09, 2008, 11:41:11 AM »
How many and what kind of decoys did you use last year for hunting ducks and geese?

For me:
Ducks on small water - a dozen mallards and a few Green Wing teal if I felt like it
Ducks on big water - 5 dozen mallards, 1 dozen Green Wing teal and six Canada's
Geese on fields - 12 dozen shells, 1 dozen skinny's (silo's) and 6 magnum shells
Geese on water - 1 dozen floaters

For ducks I use 18 mallard an 2 teal dekes. Later in the season my partner brings his 2doz along as well.
Geese I use (early season)..... 12 shell decoys.....(later season) 3doz shells, 2doz silos and flag.
For geese in the water, my partner has 6 floaters and I set up some shells on long stakes to keep the dekes just above the water.  :)

I recently finished repainting all of my Canada heads this spring.  That is sure a job to do and my wife wasn't too thrilled with them all over the house drying.   ;D

For Me,
DUCKS         Small Water:2-4 doz Mallard,4-8 other kind with color, maybe 1 spinner
    DUCKS         Big Water:4-8doz mallard 10-12 other kind w/color,2-3 spinner's,with
maybe 1/2 doz canada's out to one side

Geese           Big Water: 3-6 doz floater's w/2-3 doz diver's out to one side
"   "             Field Hunt: It all depends on the Geese and how MUCH pressure from
other hunters,[10-12doz] most of the time
As for Ducks,The thing we have found out, when we use our cork ducks, they seem to
need less decoys to come right on in. When we add the different kinds of birds
with with colors it helps more also!
Geese,The 2-3 doz diver's with the geese out to one side seem to help quite a bit,
they work like confidence decoys. Have used them w/& w/o and we have
            brought in more birds with!

At the end of last hunting season I cut back my decoys.I had 12 dozen standard Flambeau ducks all mallards. I only put them all out in a few places i hunt. Now I have cut way back. 1 dozen Higdon magnums mallards,1 dozen GHG magnumsmalladrs,1 dozen life size GHG mallards,1/2 dozen life size GHG pintails,1 dozen life size GHG gadwalls, and 1/2 dozen life size GHG Woodducks.
God created man,Sam Colt made them equal.
