Remington 742
« on: April 30, 2008, 05:59:50 AM »
A couple weeks ago I purchased a very rusted Remington 742.  It has someone's initials and some totemic animals etched into the stock, so a local who might be less PC than me would call this an Indian gun (but I will not).  I think I pick up a gun like this because I feel sorry for it.  And I have done it before, and it works out well.   My first effort at removing external rust revealed the caliber to be 6 MM.  I have been unable to remove the bolt and action bar from the receiver even though it cycles fine.  Does anyone know how to remove the bolt on a 742?  Also, other than .244, does anyone know what other calibers might work for a replacement barrel given this bolt face (in the event a barrel in another caliber comes along before one in 6 MM/.244 comes along as this barrel is too far gone)?  Thanks very much.

You must pull the barrel first...the bolt and action bar come out the front of the receiver...

At the front of the receiver you will see after removing the fore arm a nut just under the barrel. Depending on the year of manufacture it may require a spanner or just a wrench. Removing the nut will free the barrel extension and barrel to be removed forward. I've attached a parts blow up for your info. Any further questions just ask, hope we can help.

As to different barrels there is little difference in the 742 other than magazines between the common calibers.. The standard bolt face covers 308.30-06, 243 etc.. only mags change..

Thank you very much for the information.  It should do the job.  And thanks for the diagram.
