Interested in an AR Target rifle....Help please.
« on: January 13, 2006, 06:50:59 AM »
I was very close to buying a Bushmaster Varmint last year but at the last minute opted for a Tikka Varmint in .223.  Well, that old feeling is coming back around and I'm looking at AR's again.  I have no experience with these types of rifles and my big question is accuracy.  My buddy's and I target shoot and I just don't know what to expect from an AR.  My Tikka will typically do sub- 1/2 inch groups at 100 yds and for my use, I would hate to spend the bucks for an AR and not get the results I am looking for.  Any comments on what kind of accuracy you guys are getting is welcomed.  Also, suggestions on manufacturers and models.  Thanks

I just bought A rock River Arms Varmint. It has done 1/2" groups with Black hills 77gn reloads and my own reloads 24gns Varget, 75gn Hornady HPBT. The Match lower has a better trigger than the Bushmaster I tried, (my opinion) Cant lose with this rifle for the money. There are Competition supply vendors out there that can fit you with sights if you want to compete in NRA Match riflr competition. I compete in Tacticle rifle matches using scopes.

hardly,
I realize this is a late reply, but sometimes better late than never. I would suggest that you go to AR15.com for any questions regarding this peculiar little rifle. Most of the posters are builders and are interested in  "M4 forgeries", but every major manufacturer is represented and contactable there. Additionally, if you search, there are quite a few shooters building either AR 15 service rifle or AR 15 national match competition rifle, many by mating one brand of upper assembly with another brand of lower assembly. It is only the lower receiver that is FFL dependent, and you can order and have an upper assembly shipped from any manufacturer. The lower must be obtained via an FFL. I was just at a state 200 yard, 100 shots offhand competition, and there were all sorts of ARs there. There were no Bushmasters, but RRA, Armalite and Colt were in abundance.

The RRA is the biggest bang for the buck in a target AR. you could get a Whiteoak upper and a lower of your choice with a match trigger  and really do it right for a couple of bucks more .

White Oak Precision Service Rifle Uppers
Our service rifle uppers are what we believe to the best available. They are put to the test every weekend by many of the best service rifle competitors in the nation, and they pass the test. Many State, Regional, and National titles have been won by competitors using our service rifle uppers.

While copied by several others, our rear sight modification is still the gold standard that the others try to live up to. We have been improving the AR rear sight with the addition of hardened steel tracking pins for longer than anyone. And while the others stop there, that was just the beginning for us. Since 1996, we have been tightening tolerances, adding new features, using better parts, and improving the sight all around to insure that you have the most repeatable sights available for service rifle competition.

Our float tube uses heavy walled tubing for strength and added weight. The end cap is securely welded to the tube, as is the sling swivel lug. You will not flex or break this tube.

We currently stock Shilen, Pac-Nor, and Krieger barrels for use on our uppers. These are all top quality, hand lapped barrels that will give you the accuracy needed to compete at the top levels of competition. We have several choices of chambers to suit your needs.

Features Standard on a White Oak Precision Service Rifle

The White Oak Precision rear sight eliminates unwanted movement on all axes by combination of quality parts and meticulous assembly. Two hardened steel tracking pins are fitted down through the sight base and into the receiver, preventing rotational play of the rear sight. The tracking pins also allow the elimination of the detent ball and spring on the left side of the base, greatly improving repeatability. The elevation thread fit to the receiver is held to close tolerances; this, along with a second elevation wheel ball detent, will prevent lateral movement of the rear sight base. The sight base screw and the windage screw are precision machined to our specifications.
The rear sight leaf is threaded to allow for interchangable aperture inserts. A sight hood is also available. Windage and elevation are available in 1/4 MOA and 1/2 MOA adjustments.

Barrels on all White Oak Precision service rifle uppers are profiled, threaded, and chambered in-house. This allows us to control the quality of the work and allows us to offer you choices in barrel manufacturer, twist rate, and chamber specs.

A windage adjustable front sight base is standard on the White Oak Precision service rifle upper. The front sight base is forged and machined to our specifications. Opposing set screws are installed in the front of the base to allow for windage adjustment. A single set screw comes up through the bottom of the rear of the base to lock it in place and form a tight seal at the gas port. A 0.052" front sight post is standard, but we can make other sizes upon request. The top and sides of the post are tapered to provide a sharp sight picture. A set screw is installed under the sight post to lock it into place. We adjust the front sight base for windage to center the rear sight during test firing on all of our service rifle uppers.

White Oak Precision service rifle uppers are availble in pre-ban and post-ban configurations. Pre-ban rifles will have a bayonet lug on the front sight base and an A1 or A2 style flash hider. Post-ban will have an 11 degree target crown.

The White Oak Precision service rifle float tube is precision machined on CNC equipment and is the best and strongest available. The sling swivel lug is welded, not soldered, and the end cap is welded all the way around for added strength. The bottom of the sling swivel lug is machined to allow access to the set screw in the bottom of the front sight housing. One inch of thread engagement between the barrel nut and tube give good alignment as well as strength. Precision CNC machining ensures that the threads are straight and have a proper fit. This ensures that your barrel is in the center of the tube, not off to one side. The top of the tube is machined to allow clearance for the gas tube. Heavy walled tubing adds weight to the rifle. The barrel nut is machined to allow barrels up to 1.050" diameter to be installed without modifications to the barrel or barrel nut.

I have a Varminter and am very happy with it.  I happen to like the trigger as well.  My gun will shoot a 1/2" or better.  Winchester white box 45 grain hollow points shoot extremely well.  Sierra 52 grain boattails shoot great too.

Comparing White Oak to RRA
Before I had the RRA Varmint upper, I had the White Oak Match upper on my RRA  match lower. Even tho the WO is more set up for match shooting (.750, 26 inch barrel), The shorter, thicker barrel of the RRA was more accurate up to 300yds (my farthest available distance) and was about $170 cheaper. The WOs 1-7 rifled barrel might shoot 80 grain bullets better than the RRA 1-8 but the 77s shot fine in the RRA

IRA51, what kind of groups do your service rifles get at 600 yds?   same question for your varminter/scoped long barrel ARs at 600 and 1000 yds
