I have one on my 12" Encore 44....works good, I like it...perhaps not as precise an aiming instrument as a cross-hair, but excellent for hunting.........what was your question ??

Has anyone tried the Tru-Glo 2x red dot sight?  I've been thinking of getting one for my 357 mag barrel.

There are a lot of really inexpensive red dots out there.  I have two and they are both on rimfire pistols.  The better one (I don't recall the name, but it is more of a heads up display, not a tube and was made in Russia) is on a Buckmark and works pretty well.  I also have a Tasco on a .22 mag Contender barrel.  I don't think I would rely on either on a barrel with any real kick.  I am concerned that they would self distruct.  Especially the 30 dollar Chinese Tasco.

What kind of red dot will hold up to .45-70?

I would look at red dots made by the major quality optics companies and then look for tests and other comments.  For a big kicker I would guess you will need to spend some money.

I thought, as simple as they are, they would hold up better than optically complex scopes. I was a fool. I bought a closeout holo type sight. It lasted for 3 rounds on my .45 WinMag Contender. I replaced it with a cheap scope which has been working fine. From doing the autopsy on the thing - seeing how it failed - this is one case where I would recommend spending a lot of $$$ if you want a holo or a red dot. I will stick with the cheap scope - it is more accurate, although slower to acquire the target.

I know I dont have a conteder but I do own a 460 encore 15 inch barrrel and you aint going to beleive his but I put a pineridge reddot scope from cabelas on it and I figured it would bust real quick . like I said you aint going to believe this but it is shock proof I have shot several hundred rounds of 454 and several 460 loads through it and guess what not one sign of any problem . It functions  the same as when  I first got it. That my friends is not from ripleys believe it or not it is 454-hunters believe itor not . They claim they are shock proof tested on a 500 smith and wesson so all I can tell you is yes they work Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have used the UltraDot brand on my Bullseye pistols for quite a while. It was only natural to mount one on my 45ACP G2. The UltraDots come with a lifetime warranty and they really stand behind them. Out of 34 Bullseye shooters in my club only one guy doesn't use UltraDots, but he is probably going to change this season.
I was not born in Texas, but I got here as soon as I could.

Well Dan.....I can't say from personal experience yet...but I have one of these http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0044064713016a&navCount=2&podId=0044064&parentId=cat602371&masterpathid=&navAction=push&cmCat=MainCatcat602006-cat601590-cat602371&catalogCode=IJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat602371&hasJS=true ordered (it's on back order currently) from Cabela's. Now, I've called Trijicon as I'm going to mount this on my Springfield 1911. You mount this on the slide and it "bounces" back and fourth with the slide every time you shoot it. So....it's going to get "beat up" quite a bit. Now, the tech guys @ Trijicon told me to go ahead....the 1911 isn't going to dish out enough force to hurt the unit. The Trijicon is rated to take 5,000"g's" of recoil. Now, their "sister" unit (which is made over sea's) the Dr. Optic...is rated to take only 1,000 "g's" of recoil.

So, I would guess this unit would hold up on the 45-70....but you could always give the tech boys at Trijicon a call. And besides, the units are lifetime warranty.

As soon as I get it....and run a few hundred rounds thru it.....I'll give a range report. I got this thru the big "C" as I had $150 of Cabela "point's. So the unit didn't cost me the $320 out of pocket.  ;D

Last year, I put a Millett 3" dot on a silly pistol, just to check it out.  Worked great on chickens and pigs but covered too much target on turks and rams.

I have a couple of the tasco pro-points.  They worked good on my contender barrels.  I ended up going with higher magnification and higher dollar scopes to keep up with the competition.  I was good out to 100 yards.  Beyond 100 yards, too much dot and not enough target.  Never had a malfunction other than forgetting to turn it off and having a battery go dead.  Shot them on 7tcu, 32 mag, 270 ren, 30-30, and 30 carbine barrels.

I just put a Millet on a 10" 7mm TCU. It's a good compromise between a scope and iron sights. It's more precise than  the irons without the bulk of a scope. I like it so much that I'm considering putting a red dot on my 45-70 BFR. From what I hear though, the Ultra Dot is the only real choice for the serious recoiling calibers.

I have an older Tasco PDP3 that has seen action on several of my guns.  For about 100 shots, it was on my 14" .375 winchester until I decided to go back to open sights.  No problem with it (yes, I was scared, but it functioned with no problems).  It now sits on top of my Ruger GP100 which is where it is going to stay.
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

the cheap one from Sportsmans guide failed after a couple of shots mounted on the 45-70  :o

after shot number 2 it shot farther and farther left until it was off the paper , they did take it back however.

I have had an UltraDot brand 3 moa red dot sight on my 7x30 14" Contender since the gun was brand new.  Have deer hunted with it since and couldn't be happier.  Have taken numerous bucks out to about 130 yards with ease.
