Digital scales
« on: May 31, 2008, 06:09:04 PM »
I bought a Lee anniversary kit and the only thing that I didn't like was the scale. I thought about spending $70 or so for a Lyman or a RCBS but I ran across a scale that works pretty good. It is a Digi Weigh dw100ax.

I think I paid about $25 for it on the web and it has worked out great. I have done some comparisons and it seems to be accurate.

Only drawback is that it is accurate to +-.2gr, fine for large case reloading but not close enough if you are doing the small cal stuff.  I use a NEVA, also cheap, it goes to +-.1 I think if they work just fine, I have never had a problem with mine.  The ballance type can get you much closer than .1gr if you know how to run it.  Larry

I had one of those Lee Balance beam scales once.. I ended up trashing it and got a Pact BBK II with the a/c adapter and never looked back....

I've owned two electronic scales and neither of them worked right. I'll stick with a balance beam. To me they are are a lot more reliable. The RCBS 10-10 is what I now use.

i had all kinds of trouble with my balance beam and just finally went out and got the lyman setup where it dispenses the right amount of powder for you at the touch of a button and it goes into an electronic scale and then you dump it into the cartridge.

i would never go back to the old slow way.

I wouldn't worry about it.
All any of the scales, balance beam or digital, will guarantee is +/- .1 and it takes a lot of practice to run a balance beam to .1.
Wasn't too long ago that Bench Rest shooters were setting records using dippers for their powder measures.  And still few of them actually weight their powder charges.
And too, precise powder weight is the least important (within reason) facet amongst the variables in your cartridge construction.

I've never had much luck buying bargain basement tools, reloading or otherwise. Almost 20 years ago, bought a RCBS electronic scale, paid big money for it,somewhere around $250. But I was shooting in cast bullet matchs, and I was getting tired of the Lyman balance beam I had, taking a minute or so to even out, while sorting out cast bullets.
What with electronics's and computers coming way down in price, the Hornady or Dillion portable scale's look to be the best one's around. JMO-gypsyman

I picked up the RCBS electonic scale/dispenser.  It's nice 'cause I don't have to trickle and weigh every charge.  It is expensive, but well worth it.  My buddies are jealous!

I use an RCBS 10-10.
