Youth model 700 SPS accuarcy?
« on: May 03, 2008, 06:30:34 AM »
Looking at one of these for about $375 new right now and really wanted to know if there is a big
difference between the 20" and the 24" barrel as far as accuracy goes.
I really like the lighter feel, but definitely do not want to give up any down range performance.
Has anybody compared these before?  I would really like to know!

                                                       Thanks,

The shorter barrel is stiffer and if anything might tend to be more accurate. You'll lose a bit of velocity with it but not likely any accuracy.

Excellent that was the answer I was hoping for.
I wasn't sure being shorter if the 243's powder charge would
have plenty of time to fully ignite/burn.

Powder is fully burned in the first few inches of barrel that is a common misconception that folks have thinking that unburned powder results when barrels get cut a bit less than 26" just not so. But velocity will continue to rise the longer the barrel until it gets really long. Even a 30" or maybe 32" barrel would give more velocity but not much more than say a 26". But cutting to 20" leaves plenty to get the job done.

Thanks to GB for saving me some typing in regards to the "powder" theory. Nab the 20" and don't look back :)

The Remington model 7 is perfect for the 243 Winchester with the 20" barrel.  The 243 Winchester is also a great youth deer cartridge, proven over and over and over.

Many people kill deer with the 243 Winchester in the T/C Encore 15" pistol barrels, so short barrels are no problem.

Accuracy is also no problem.

The range report will be up as soon as I convince the wife that the new
gun needs at least a $200 optic.  $300 would be better!!!
The first report will be with factory 100 gr PSP's.
Hopefully this week!
