The local Sportsmans is out of large rifle primers but they have magnum and magnum match primers.  I'm wanting to load up some 7mm-08 rounds for my new rifle and want to know if I can use the magnum match primers safetly.

Thanks,
Ken

they will probably work but theres no guarantee accuracy will be the same and if you use a mag primer substituting it for a standard start at the bottom end of the loading manual suggested powder charges and work up very carefully as they will create more pressure in your load

The mag. primers will start your powder burning faster and make your pressure cure spike faster and possibly higher. As Lloyd said start low and work you load up because it will be a different load and may be more or less accurate than the load your using now. The 308 case is to small to benefit from mag. primers, but you can try a few, they may work well.

I've seen mag primers used on ball powders in 308.  If you use a ball powder in 7mm-08, I can't see that it would be a problem.

Shouldn't be a problem. If you're looking for a load, start low and use your usual caution in working up. If you have an extablished load, back off at least 10%. If you've a new rifle, you should do that anyway.

  • I feel much better now knowing it will get worse.
My loading books call for the use of Mag Primers with ball powders. Fed 215  is the hottest of all of them. I would also back off a couple of grains on the load to see what you got.  Don't be surprised if your rifle will group differently when you switch to other primers then what you used before.
