454 casull
« on: May 11, 2008, 01:12:12 AM »
I just started reloading this cartridge. I've tried a couple different powders & bullets. Does anyone have a mild load for 250 grain jacketed bullet. I've tried Lil Gun with 27 grains and it went 1650 ft/sec in my 12" encore. It isn't the hottest but still let's you know it when fired. Thanks.

10-12 grains of unique, power pistol, universal clays or herco. it should get you around 900-1100 fps and very little recoil. Switch from a jackted bullet to a cast bullet with a decent meptlat and those loads will kill about any animal your going to hunt with a handgun.

I agree with Lloyd.  I use Herco 11 gr. and a 250 cast, or unique 10.5 gr and 250 cast, at around 1100 fps.  Mild and accurate in my guns.

Thanks, for the info. alot of the loading info for this cartridge seems to be all over the place, what I mean by that is the power charge and length all completely different from one source to the other. I have loaded a few full house loads with Lil Gun @ 2205 ft/sec and H110 @ 2035 ft/sec and those are painful to shoot. Thanks again.

I have used 8.5 grains of Trailboss with 250 grain cast bullets and my Encore was very comfortable to shoot. No chrono, but data says it should be little less than 1000 fps.

Silly question. Why don`t you load .45 Colt cases for lite loads? They will get you more for less and are a lot cheaper than .454 cases.

That's what I do! It is very easy to tell the heavy loads from the lite ones
