This was a very bad day!!!!!!!
« on: May 27, 2008, 03:25:58 PM »
This was not a good day. As you guys know I had a real rough winter. I had to sell the stock and scope to my Rem. SPS Varmint 243. Well I did manage to put a new stock on it this spring. I have been waiting to sell a decent job so I can top it with a 16 power Super Sniper scope. That has not happened yet. I think mostly because of gas prices. People are only spending money on what they need. All that is besides the point. I have already missed a good part of Groundhog season because I don't have a decent scope to put on it. Well this morning I decided to put a 3x9 Simmons White Tail on it,that I had lying around. I figured I would head out to the range and sight it in and maybe hit a field or two on the way home and get a couple Groundhogs. WRONGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was almost to the range when the van starting acting up. The stereo started going off and on. This is an after market stereo so I figured I must have a loose wire some where. I was still on my way to the range because I thought this was something I could fix later and was not to concerned. So as I am on my way down the road and it starts pouring down rain. The kind that comes down in buckets. At this point the radio stops working. I turn on the wind shield wipers and they won't come on. I can't roll the windows up because they are power windows. So needless to say I am getting soaked to the bone driving down the road. The van looses power and I have to run as fast as I can down hills to be able to  make it up the next hill. At this point it is really running like crap. I did turn around and headed for home when I realized I had problems. The thing I had going through my head was the last time I had this van towed it cost $70.00 to hook it up to the tow truck and then it was $3.50 a mile. I figured the closer I could get to the guy that works on our cars the better at this point. My wife's dad only lives a couple miles from where it finally stopped. I broke down in a church parking lot and used their phone to call my wife. I called home for over an hour with no answer. I finally called a neighbor to go over to my house to see why no one is answering the phone. Turns out the phone jack came loose. I told my wife to bring my tool box and the jumper cables. It took her another hour to  get to me. By the way it is really only a 15 minute drive. Don't ask me what she did with the other 45 minutes. It turns out it in the alternator. I switched the battery from her car to my van and the battery from my van to her car, to get my van home. All I wanted to do was go shoot some tiny little groups. Dale

A bad day at the range is better than a good day at work!!

[By the way it is really only a 15 minute drive. Don't ask me what she did with the other 45 minutes.]

She's to be complimented, on her speed & obvious concern - compared to the wife of my friend.

My friend got rushed to the hospital because he was having a heart attack, and so his wife was immediately called to "come down".

She did - three hours later, after she had showered & had her hair done !

When I queried her about it, she haughtily replied that she certainly couldn't show up at the hospital, looking the way she did, and figured her husband was in good hands, anyway ! (dee-doo, dee-doo)

So, although you had a bad day, consider that it could have been worse - you're still alive & posting !  :)

That's a bad day alright. At least it's an easy fix. Alternators not as bad as a timing chain or something major.

Dale, sorry to hear about your luck buddy.  Like the other guys said; luckily it's an easy fix and you're alive and well.  It was a bad day alright but it could have been a lot worse.

I remember when we were expecting our first child.  My wife's water broke.  Before we could leave for the hospital she had to take a shower and shave her legs.  She could hardly reach her feet, but damned if she was going to let the OBGYN see stubble on her legs.  Anyway, we made it with time to spare.
