Need some info on 165gr 30 -06 bullets....
« on: April 20, 2008, 04:57:55 AM »
Will be hunting Large Whitetails in Canada and hopefully large Mule deer in Montana.  Want to work up a good load probably with H-4350.  Thinking Interbond, Tipped Triple Shock Barnes, Accubond.  Canada hunting is in the woods and shots 100yds to 200yds.  Mule deer out to 300yds.  I shoot at a club that has ranges out to 300yds.  So I may take a shot at 300yds + but not much more.  The Accubond is less money than the Interbond is that for a performance reason?  I am interested in accuracy first and then bullet performance.      Thanks for the help.   Buckfever

I load 165gr bullets for my 30-06 and have for years. IMHO if I felt a need for "premium" bullets for deer I'd use partitions or bonded bullets. I'd not hesitate to use Hornady 165 flat base bullets. If you feel a need for controlled expansion bullets why not move up to 180gr bullets?  Canada must have open woods for 100-200 yard shots.

The barnes tipped TSXBT is the only bullet I load for hunting for the .30-06 now.  Gives me great accuracy.  I load it in 168 grains.  Haven't loaded the interbonds or accubonds...  have the interlocks (pretty cheap) and they didn't give me too great of accuracy...  pretty crappy actually.

I am a real believer in 165-grain bullets in .300 Savage, 308 Winchester, and the 30-06.  I have mention earlier that when I was a kid there was a neighbor who was an Oregon, California, and Washington .30-Caliber champion.  I first encountered the 165-grain Hornady on his reloading bench.  If I recall correctly this was in the early 1960’s and IMR4350 was not on the market at the time.  He was loading with IMR4064.  More impressive then the trophies were the bucks hanging in his garage every year.  I watched them skin out many a deer and I do not recall seeing a recovered bullet.  The man was a competitive champion and I am sure he would not have used a bullet that did not produce good accuracy in his rifle.  I spent enough time watching him load for his 30-06, and his varmint rifles to know that he was perfectionist.  The man hunted in California and Oregon obtaining the maximum number of tags each year, and filling them.

As I grew a little older I acquired a friend who hunts with a 30-06, his favorite bullet is a Speer 165-bullet.  Normally those bullets are not recovered, but one evening his bullet penetrated the top of a stump, entered the flank of a buck, and stop up against a front shoulder.  I am guessing that weight retention was close to seventy percent, with jack and core together.

I have loaded the Hornady BT, flat base for the 30-06.  The loads were accurate and good enough to qualify with the rifle.  I have loaded 165-grain Remington C-L, Hornady BT and Flat base, Speer Hot Core, and Nosler PT in the 30-06, and bolt action .300 Savage.  In either rifle the bullets stay in the same small group at 100-yards.  In the 30-06 I used H414 and H4831 powder.  If I did not have the other two powders I would have tried one of the 4350 powders.

I have hunted Mule deer for over 40-years and I see no need for the Nosler Partition or other premium bullets for them when using a 165-grain bullet out of the –06.  The only reason I load and hunt with them is they were given to me.  The 4x4 mule deer I shot this year hit the snow so fast that I was slight confused because I lost sight of the deer with the recoil.  When I skinned the deer the rapid expansion of the bullet was obvious and then the path across the front of the shoulder, into the neck, hitting the spine and exiting out the other side.  The amount of damage generated by the bullet before hitting the spine was impressive.  I am sure that at 30-06 velocities a hit at the same location would generate complaints of to much meat damages from some hunters.  This is typical of what I have seen with 165-grain bullets in the 30-06.  I hunt in Black Bear country and I have seen a number bear take with 30-30 rifles up starting with 150-grain bullets.  The 165-grain bullet is an improvement over a good thing.

Many will argue in favor of a 180-grain bullet in the 30-06.  If you are into Texas Heart Shots it will offer you outstanding penetration, and break up the pelvis of a departing deer.  While I will not argue against a 180-grain bullet, the 165-grain, .308-diameter bullet suits my needs when it comes to deer hunting.

I have loaded 165gr 30-06 for about the past 5 years. Before that I used 150gr reloads. I switched to the 165's because they are less destructive on deer. The 150's left an awful big hole in deer, where the 165 doesn't leave such a hole.
I am using a Speer 165gr spitzer bullet with 47.0 grs of IMR 3031 powder. They are at about 2750fps through my chronograph.I have shot a lot of deer with this load with excellent results. In 2006 I also shot a cow elk with it,the bullet  broke up and lodged mostly on the other side and there was a small hole about 1" where a bigger piece went through. This was 120yds with 1 shot though the boiler room.  ;D

Dave in WV, there are some timber cuts and logging roads that can get you out to 200ytds.   The majority of deer shot at our hunting area are right about 100 yds.  They are large deer and some of them weight over 300lbs.  When you hit a big one they usually go 25 to 100yds even with magnums.  God I love Saskatachewan.     Buckfever

Any 165gr bullet will work fine on deer as their just not that hard to kill.  As for accuracy, I've loaded all three of those in my 06's and had the best luck with 165 Accubonds w/ H4350.  I shoot 56.5grs for about 2825fps out of my 24" tube.  This gun is mainly for elk, but has worked great on 2 big muley bucks.

Y'all might flame me but there ain't no flies on the 165 Rem Core Lokt.  That said, I'd just pick the standard bullet that gave me the best accuracy.  I like flat based, cup and core bullets with a channalure even though I don't crimp my bullets though.

Heck I'll add wood to the flame and say you're right, least in my experience.  I currently load 165gr Hornady SPs in two 30-06 rifles.  I could be happy using either one on deer.

I don't use a 165 in my '06's...I use 168's and 180's...but here is my favorite 168 load:

Bullet: Sierra 168 Grain Boat Tail Hollow Point
Powder: 56.6 grains of IMR-4350
Primer: Winchester 8-1/2
Case: Winchester
Firearm: Ruger 77R
Optics: Leupold 4x12AO
Velocity: 2801 FPS @ 15' from muzzle
Accuracy: 5-shot, 200-yard groups of ~ 0.75"

I've had great luck with the 165 grain Accu-Bond. I used to load with Ballistic Tips, and still do, but the Accu-Bond holds together better and pentrates deeper. The Barnes are great too. One thing I should have learned long ago, is that premium bullets are cheap comapared to the costs of the hunt itself. That, and sometimes you have to shoot what your rifle likes, and it's not always the bullet that I would like. I think that Accu-Bond is one of the more accurate hunting projectiles on the market, and it performs great.

I load the 165 CL and 165 Partitions in my '06AI.  I was hoping to get to 3000fps, but the groups keep opening up past about 2850. Recoil is mild, but my gun is heavy.  Consistently less than 1" 5 shot groups at 100 and several 1" groups at 200.    I like the 165s.

It is not bonded or high tech but I have had great luck with the Sierra 165. It is known to be accurate and it has performed perfectly for me on deer from 65 to 230 yds.

Ricci, why are you using a match bullet to hunt?  I have used the Sierra 165gr hpbt for 20 years with great success. It is in the Game King listing. Your .308 168g hpbt is a Match King. They have a VERY small hollow point and are not intended to expand.

My vote goes to 165 gr bullets as the best all round weight for the 06. Which one depends on what your rifle likes. You don't need Premium stuff. The only bullet I would be  hesitant to use at very short ranges is the  WW Powerpoints. They are fragile !! For the range in my area 200 yards would be long I have gone back to RN style bullets in reduced loads.

I've been reloading for the .06 for more than forty years and am satisfied that the 165/168 weight bracket is a good hunting compromise on everything, velocity, accuracy, penetration, killing power. Among the stick powders I lean toward 4350, and in ball powders, to Win 760, the latter because it flows through the powder measure like water. There are others I haven't tried that are most likely equally as good.

IMHO, there's no such thing today as a bad 165 grain bullet; all of them are good. I use Nosler partition because I like them and because I live in Bend, OR, where Nosler is located, and I get their seconds for about the same price you'd pay for Speer, Hornady, etc.
