Was not a bolt action but last November at Cabelas  a Marlin 35 Rem 336C lever action price was $419 new.  They also had a very nice used one for $399. On a previous advertisement sale a few months earlier the price was $365.

You can get some good deals at Cabelas at times. I never pay the asking price in the used gun rack. Most of the prices there are retarded, but if you can find one of the guys in the gun library with some clout that can look into what they have in it and lower the price accordingly. Some of them they have too much money in them and cant lower the price, so those can stay on the rack. I have one guy I deal with up there that can adjust the prices when he is the one there with the most clout. I dont go up there unless he is there and call ahead to find out. For the most part, the prices marked on their used guns are more than or equal to the new price for the firearm, so they can just keep those.
A local gun store near me is basically famous for pricing their guns for MSRP + 10%, so I wont buy anything new from them. Usually their used gun rack is priced about like Cabelas but you can find some good deals. I just found a Remington 700 BDL with a Zeiss Diavari C 3-9x36 scope on it for $500 and they had Browning A-Bolt Stainless in 280 with the same scope on it for $800.  Buy your used guns like you would buy a car and never pay the full sticker price for it and if they wont budge, walk away. they can keep the sumbeech.

The nearest Cabela's is several hours from me, but there are 3 Gander stores here in the Houston area which I visit on a somewhat regular basis.  The few times I've been in the Cabelas store, I have been disappointed on the prices of their used guns.  As for Gander mtn, near  the end of last deer season I was in a Gander store just to brouse.  Noticed  a large number of their new rifles were not priced and there was one of these I had an interest in.  In checking with one of the Gander clerks, I was told they were in process of reducing their rifle prices and that he was just getting ready to put the new price tags on those with no prices.  While waiting for the clerk to sort the price tags we struck up a nice conversation.  He found the price tag for the rifle I was interested in and mentioned it had been reduced at least $40.  I was familiar with the pricing on this particular rifle and commented, gee ya'll reduced the price to about the normal retail price.  The clerk glanced around and quietly said, yes we had to raise prices a month or so before the beginning of deer season to take advantage of expected rifle sales, and management finally realized that was a mistake after rifle sales were so disappointing.  However, I did buy a used Ruger M77 (with tang safety) in 270 cal with a Bushnell Banner variable scope from Gander a few months ago for $210.  Metal and bore was great, scope was still good, just the stock needed a little loving care.  After refinishing the stock, fellow shooters at rifle range I frequent were surprised I had paid only $210 (plus tax) for it.

Got my Remington M700 .308 Win, used, at Gander Mountain.  $350 an it looked like new.  first time to the range it shot 6 touching at 100 yards with the other 3 just outside the one large hole.

See my post above.  Also bought, in 2002, a used Marlin 1895 .45-70 at a gun shop.  Price was $249.95 and it looked like new.  Excellent price and shoots great.

I periodically get a real deal at a gun show.  Best to go the first 2 hours of the show, because that's when the best buys disappear.
Vote them all out, EVERY election!

So you are saying that my guns are now worth more than I payed for them brand new. Some, maybe, but all?

Gun prices have gone up in the new sales. I can remember when I could buy a new Rem 700 for $200  and other guns I paid less then $1000 for but now I couldn't touch them for under $1000 because the price is around $1500.

No see a gun loses value just like a car. If you go buy a new car and then try to immediately sell it you lose about $5000  and the same goes for guns. A scope loses half of its value unless its a real cheap one then it is worth nothing. Buying used is always the way to go.
