Jianshe Mountian Lion 400?????
« on: March 19, 2008, 08:51:25 AM »
Anybody ever heard of or has one of these ATV's?  I know they are Chinese made but just wondering about reliability.  I can't seem to find too much info on them that comes from people that actually own one.  Thanks.

Every thing I've heard so far on the Chinese imported ATVs is bad and folks are saying to stay away from them as if they were the plague. I know nothing about them personally and don't expect to change that.

Yeah, when I hear the word China I always get a little suspicious.  I heard they were affiliated with Yamaha but that doesn't make them as good by any stretch.

I SERIOUSLY doubt there is any affliation with Yamaha but they might be Chinese copies of them. That does NOT mean parts will interchange.

The single biggest problem with them really is that there is no dealer network and no parts distribution channels. Just anyone who wants to can buy them wholesale and sell them at retail. Matt and a buddy of his are doing it locally. But there is no service center to go to when one breaks and no parts to replace those needed.

Stick to buying name brands with dealerships and parts distribution networks to support your machine when it breaks or you'll be sorry in the long run.

With all the recalls from China, I would not buy one of those lead paint covered vehicles..

I purchased a Jianshe Mountain Lion 400 3 days ago. It was brand new and it was from our local dealer here in Meadow Lakes/Wasilla Alaska. I paid $4,000.00 for the machine. It came with only a 90 day limited parts only warranty. I have found it to be somewhat competitive to Polaris's 300. It only goes a max of 25mph though. It starts to cut out and sputter at this point. The control module for the turn signals was bad and needed replaced before it even left the shop. It is not built for rugged long term aggressive use, this is very obvious. It is a great machine for my use though. It is pretty much an Alaskan lawn tractor. Moving cut firewood from the back of the property to the cabin, putting around the pond, hauling yard tools and lawn clippings etc... I will use it for some heavy riding but not with other more comparable machines due to its lack of speed. The back alarm has got to go!!!!!!!!!!!! It is very annoying!! There is a clunking sound while letting off the accelerator when in 4wd. Nicely priced but you do get what you paid for.

I would have no problems buying a small one for a child to ride in the backyard.
But the bigger ones start costing more than the little ones and they are not very durable , I have doubts how long one would hold up to bouncing threw the woods around here.
If cash were the issue I'd buy a used brand name before a new chinaman one , unless like I said , a kid was going to just ride it in the backyard or something like that

My neighbor down the road bought one two weeks ago and it lasted up until Saturday.  The thing was stolen out of his driveway.  He said the Chinese quads all have generic keys and someone just started it and drove off with it. I think he paid around $2900 for his which is still too much.  I think his was just 2wd, maybe that is why the cheaper price.   A kawasaki is not but just a little more though.  China and moving parts never went well together.  Although, I hear that Cheverolet is importing Chinese engines to go in their Equinox or something like that.  The Chinese must be getting better.  Not enough for me to buy one though.

Well today my new machine started cutting out and sputtering and will not go faster than 25mph. I also can not get a winch mount kit yet. I noticed there is a Polaris 366 with a winch for $5200 brand new at the Polaris dealer. That's only $1200 more than this Chinese bike. I will try a tune up for the sputtering.

UPDATE: Today I decided to call the Jianshe America headquarters. I wish I would have done this before buying the machine. I called the corporate number, it rang and rang. No voicemail. I called that product support number. It was disconnected. I called the cell number for parts. I got a man who spoke poor English and seamed to be wary about talking on the phone. He literaly whispered to me that he would call me back in an hour "if he could"!!??. All other numbers just rang. I called on Monday 9am Pacific time. I went back to the "dealer" and asked for an oil change. He did not know how much oil to use and told me to look in the maintenance manual that was not given to me. You have to view it online and to print it takes 270 pages of paper. Does a manual come with a name brand machine? I am really starting to wonder if I made a good choice in buying a Chinese machine. I will ride it some more and take it to a real Polaris mechanic and ask them if the cutting out is normal or not and if they will do the oil change.

I bought a 2008 Kawasaki Bayou 250 about two months ago.  It came with a helmet and a cover.  The thing will do every bit of 45mph+ and was around $2900 out the door.  You can get a winch but who would need one?  I'd just pick it up out the mud hole and keep riding.  A 400cc quad that can only do 25 mph, there's something wrong there.  If you do take it to a Polaris dealer, don't expect warm treatment.  Often they will not work on them and curse you for even asking. They hate the Chinese stuff.  They see it as what is killing their industry.

Well today I got the 270 page manual printed out at the local ups store and it cost me $27.90 It was missing 5 of the 6 pages of the table of contents. I went to the website and tried to print it out at home. They are blank!! NOT THERE!! How weird is that?? OK so now I have the poorly printed 270 page manual and 30 page owners guide and still can not figure out the oil filter. Is it reusable? Where is it!! I WISH I BOUGHT AN ARCTIC CAT!!!!! You get what you pay for and I paid $2200 less than a real four wheeler and got no warranty and no piece of mind.

This machine is purely a glorified lawn tractor with gun boot for a mower...lol

Funny you would bring up Polaris.
My first experience with chinese quads was setting up new Polaris 90s and 50s.
They were made in taiwan.
The electronics are junk. Hard to get and don't get them wet.

They ran great. Just easy to break and hard to fix.

i cant see buying one. The jap bikes are good bikes and can be picked up cheap used. I just picked up a 250 4x4 yamaha timberwolf thats a 1995 thats about like new for 1200 bucks. even had new tires. I didnt really need it but figured for 1200 bucks it would make a good bike to leave at camp. For 4000 bucks you can buy one hell of a nice used 4x4 four wheeler and have a legitmate dealer nearby to deal with it when it breaks or at least to get you parts.
