Author Topic: Marking rifle from revolver rounds (Read 467 times)

Since both my rifle and revolvers are .45LC and I have just a bit of difference in the cartridges for them I decided to load one in brass and the other in nickle. They are just a bit different in length--enough to cause me to have to adjust my seating die about 1/2 a turn. Another problem is I loose a couple of nickle ones each match so figure I'll just go to all brass as the nickle ones go bye-bye.

(I probably loose a few brass ones, too, but since I have so many of them I really don't notice this--at least till I get low on them.)

To keep them straight I'll mark the primer ends with a wide marker. Plain for the revolvers and Red for the rifle as these are a bit hotter and red = heat. At least that's the way I'm going to remember it.

Good idea I do this all the time, Black Primers for my BP rounds and plain for the regular kind, Red, Orange or Pink for my different rifle rounds color depends on what I happen to grab when I mark them.

:-D See, I've been trying to tell ya!!! Prime a case, drag it through a cup of FF and seat a bullet!!!

No fuss, no double charges, no mixing and marking of rifle or pistol cartridges. It's easy to tell your brass from everyone else's, too, it'll be the ones with all the pretty colors!

Black Powder is SOOO much easier!!!!!

I'd look around to see if anyone still offers brass primers. Brass primers in rifle loads and nickled in pistol would be a sure identifier that would not wear off. I tried the Magic Marker to keep my .257 Roberts cases separate from my 6.5 Roberts cases, but it tended to wear off. Birchwood Casey's brass black lasts a lot better.

I keep all mine in plastic boxes till I put them in the loading block. Know the plastic isn't period correct but it does keep the dust off and nothing is touching the cases wearing off the marker.

When you get done loading 'em take a stamping tool and stamp an "R" for "rifle" in the primer. Shouldn't wear off at all

The Sanford "Sharpie" is the best for the primer - won't rub off in your pocket and of course, it's gone when the primer is removed so you can shoot a different load the next time. Black for pistol and red for rifle - or vice versa...
