Tentative Schedule for planting
« on: May 27, 2009, 01:12:06 PM »
My hunting partner hit one of my "good nerves" today.  I did research on myself from the past two seasons and developed a reasonable schedule (many Saturdays from now until November) for planting plots this Summer (start prep now) and planting them again just prior to the 2009 hunting season opening, which could give me much better deer recruitment and sighting results than I have had in the past.

Typically, the deer eat all 3 acres of Iron and Clay peas about 16 days after they are planted, provided there is soil moisture (Mother Nature is still the "big unknown" in this schedule).  I have tried to "hide" the peas in grain and WGF sorghum, oats, and wheat.  The deer are just too good and once they find the new pea plants, mow them left to right and forward and backward until they are gone.

So, I am going to attempt either Plot Saver or a solar fence w/cattle charger shortly after planting.  Too much work on any given day is not good for this old farmer.

Went to tend some stands today.  It has been raining.  More than I wanted to admit.  The truck didn't have any problem figuring that out.  Within five minutes of driving into the edge of the big field, I was stuck.  There the F250 sits this evening, up to the axles.  The F350 4x4 couldn't get it unstuck.  So I loaded the MF 275 on the trailer this afternoon for a morning recon 30 minutes away to drag it out and get it back.  Sure hope the local Hooligans don't fill it full of bullet holes tonight.  It is on Private Property, mine, but that's no guarrantee.
