25-06 loads
« on: May 16, 2008, 06:42:15 AM »
So, got my 25.06 on paper...shoots ok, I tried the 117 sst hornady customs, and the 117 btsp light mag hornady.  The sst's shot excellent.  I also tried remington 120 grainers and no luck.  Not too concerned as I was really just trying to get it on paper and close, and get some brass for loading.  Now for the question... does anyone have any pet loads?  I am looking at 110 gr or up as I tend to reach out to 200 yds and beyond regularily and am huntin white tail.  I would like to know what people have worked up...Powder? Bullet? Grains of each?  How'd they perform?

My pet 25/06 load is:

Case: Remington
Primer: Federal 210M (match primers)
Bullet: Berger 115 gr. BTHP VLD (you can't do much better on ballistic coefficient)
Powder: 54.5 gr. RL-22

The usual caution of using a manual and working up the load safely for your own gun applies.

This load has been very accurate for me.  It will consistently do less than 0.5 inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards.  My best group with it was 0.15 inches center to center for 3 shots at 100 yards.

The Berger VLD is a match bullet and is also marketed as a big game bullet.  I've used .308 caliber VLDs on antelope and they work great.

My rifle shoots 1`0s much better than 115s. So I use Nosler 110 BTs over 51.5/H4350. Sub MOA and 3350 out of a 24 in. barrel.

Try the 100 gr Barnes TSX. IMR 4831 to get max safe velocity in your gun. A guide I hunted with called these a "guided missile." Not just fast and accurate but terminal performance unlike ANY bullet I tried. I would not hesitate for a moment to use it on elk, much less whitetails.
BTW, when you work up Barnes TSX keep them off lands by .050 to start. Being pure copper they take a bit more pressure to move into the barrel; settin' them close causes pressure spikes which don't do much for accuracy.

My pet load is 49gr of IMR4831 behind a 117gr Sierra SFB in a Remington case fired by a Winchester WLR primer. My rifle will group 1" or less with this load. I hope it works for you too. I've also had very good accuracy from a load of 53gr IMR4831 behind a 100gr Sierra BTHP with the rest being the same as the other load. Good luck with your 25-06 and I hpe you like yours as well as I like mine.
