Target picture from NEF
« on: May 24, 2008, 04:30:51 AM »
I sent a 17 HMR back to the factory because of accuracy issues.  While there I had 22 Mag and 22 LR barrels fitted as well.

When returned there was enclosed a picture of a target with three bullet strikes.  I assume this is a test target for the 17.  There is no indication of the range or other details of the test nor is there a note indicating what, if anything, was done/found.  If the target was shot at 100 yards it's OK, if 50 yards then it's not very impressive.

What is considered to be acceptable accuracy by the factory for their heavy barrel 17 HMR's?  Or, for that matter, their 22 Mag?

Thanks

my 17 sportster shoots under .5"at 100 with any of the brands of ammo I have tried. I got a 243 back with no explanation of what they did but I called customer service and she looked up the notes from the warranty repair and told me what they had done. Ive always had great service give them a call after the holiday.

Thanks for the response.

What I have seen and heard of other 17 HMR's in various brand rifles the accuracy should be an inch or under at 100 yards.  The picture they sent shows just under an inch but, as I said, indicated no range and it's only a three shot group.

Going to be a couple weeks before I have a chance to take this rifle to the range, have to put in some time riding quads with another guy.  Tough duty but someone has to step up.   ;D

I'd like to hear from anyone that has the 22 Mag and/or LR barrels as to what kind of accuracy they are getting.

The 22 mag is one of the best shooting rimfires that I have ever owned , it did so well that I got 2 more of them , 1 was rechambered to 218 Bee . As for the LR mine likes the CCI Stingers and the Fed bulk pack but hates the Rem Yellow Jackets .

The mag will shoot under 1 1/4" and most times less @ 100 all day long , while the LR will do a solid 1" @ 50 with the right ammo sometimes less . For $100 rifles you can not complain about the groups they shoot .

Thanks for that.  It's just the kind of info I was looking for.  I understand these rifles are not all that expensive but needed to know something of what the average expectation should be.  If most folks are getting 4" groups at 100 yards I should expect no more but also no less.

Fun little guns these, this three barrel setup will be passed along to my older grandson in a few years.  Have to find some scopes that are appropriate for what they can do.  That will be the next project.

For scopes look at the BSA Sweet 22's  2-7x , thats what my Bee and Mag both wear , you can find them for around $50 +/- a few bucks , the glass is clear and they hold zero , the bullet drop compensator sorta works if you use the right bullet weights .

On a scale of 1 to 10 , they get a solid 8

Thanks, been awhile since I have looked around for rimfire scopes.  I did see one at Cabela's for the 17 HMR that had a lighted reticule and bullet compensator system.  I'll sure look for the BSA line as well.
