I have several Model 870 shotguns and extra barrels. They are all well maintained and have no rust problems, with the exception of one 'rusty' extra barrel that was given to me. I have read in these forums of others with guns that rusted. I cleaned up the rusty barrel with WD40 and Remington Nitro CLP ( this is no longer produced). I have never felt confident that I totally cleaned every space beneath the vent rib.
My question is this. Would I save myself a lot of cleaning time if I painted the exterior metal with Rustoleum? I read in a previous forum where this was briefly mentioned? It would be a lot cheaper than Dura-coat. If so, should this be done with the receiver, barrel and magazine tube, inside and out?
Of course I would never paint the inside of a barrel with anything. But the idea that I could prevent exterior rust problems with Rustoleum does have appeal. I worry that it may not stand up to the heat after multiple shots, or over time. How does one clean up a Rustoleum painted gun -- with a gun oil?
This topic concerns ONLY the Express type finishes. I would never do this to a blued finish. What is your opinion ?
