new 44 mag barrel
« on: May 27, 2008, 08:12:00 AM »
I was just sent my receiver in to be fitted with a 44 mag barrel.I know the barrels come from marlin but does anyone know what type of rifling they are? I have heard that the microgrove barrels are not suited for cast bullets.
Thanks,
Wayne

Microgrove will work with cast bullets as long as you keep the velocities below about 1500 fps or so.

Wayne24,
I bought a 44 mag handi-rifle last year, and it does not have microgroove rifling.  It has 6 distinct lands and grooves.  Mine is no target rifle, shoots 4 MOA with just about any ammo I put through it, including cast lead bullets.  I've tried a variety of tweaks on it but haven't found the secret to better accuracy yet.  Nevertheless, it is rock solid and dependable, and good enough to get deer at woodland ranges, which is what I bought it for.  Worked well for me last deer season.

Cast hard and push them 1800 fps. Marlin levers got a bum rap with MG barrels til they cast hard and pushed fast. I have a 444 and 45-70 that  shoot cast just fine.
