Ruger P85 vs P89 - Differences?
« on: October 30, 2007, 04:22:15 PM »
I've been considering a P85 or P89, and thus far I can't find any differences.  I would want the version with manual safety, and would probably get the Hogue grips that are included with some of the current models.

Any differences anyone can find would be much appreciated!

Do you mean P95???     Pretty hard to come by a P85 these days.

No, I mean the P85.  See them all over the place on Auctions and distributors of police trade-ins.  The P85 looks to me just like the P89.  I wonder what the differences are and what parts are interchangeable.

The difference between the p85 and the p89 is what and how the grip frame was made. Both guns dimmensionally are identical and parts can be switched from gun to gun. the Difference is the p85 hasa milled aluminum frame where the p89 was rugers first attempt atcasting and the frame is made of chromoly steel.

I have a p-85 and there was a recall on them some years back. It seems the firing pin would break and if the two pieces turned (thereby making the firing pin longer) when you pressed the disconnect lever on a loaded chamber the gun would actually fire. They did mark the reciever when they did the upgrade to them but I can't remember what it is. Possibly a call to Ruger is in order.

Here is a link to the modifications

there are also differences in the 85 and the 85 mark 2. dont remember to what extent they were different but changes were made. a google search might help.i believe the mark 2 was the same as the 89.

That's interesting. I had to send my p-85 in for the recall, yet according to that article, the p-85 I own which has a stainless steel slide is a mark 2 (which I don't believe it is) and already had the new safety installed. Either I have a mk2 and it didn't have the repair done or I have a stainless mk1 that doesn't exist.

My son's friend picked up a P85 from a co-worker for $50; the friend said it was dangerous and would even go off on safe or when you shucked the slide for the !st round.  My son called me before he bought it to see if I thought it was an easy fix.  I told him it was a RUGER and buy it and send it to them.  It was an unfixed recall model and very well used.  It came back looking like a new gun and operating flawlessly.  Not bad for $50.
