OK....before this erupts into a "why would you  even want to......"
i just want to say that i know there are cheaper and easier ways to get nearly same thing/end result....BUT..... :)
that having been said, would it work in a handi rifle....?
im tired of sportering mausers and the like, so i thought if  i had a
bull barrel  in .223 i could ream it to accept the 22-06 wildcat cartridge and modify the extractor to remove the larger sized rim (.470")...
==============================================
i realize barrel  life is now an issue , like the 220 swift, but it might be fun if it would work.
would make the new 204 ruger see red.....heavier bullet (1:12 twist limits bullet choice..) at hyper velocities.
lemmme know what ya think!

I've been wanting to build a 22/06 for about 20 years now, just never took the time to do it. Barrel life would definately be a factor and I would guess pressures would limit you to about 220 Swift velocities. ~~ SV

....224 cark is fire formed from 257 Roberts case........ive seen data that suggests up to 3900fps with an 80 grain bullet (would req. 1-7 twist)
thats moving!!!i wonder what a 55gr. V Max would clock out at??

I have read of 22/243's before but not 22/06.  The 22/243 will exceed 220 swift velocities.  Any more will be hard to make accurate.  They had a lot of trouble getting the swift to be accurrate in developement stage.

yep...22-243 is up there!

51 gr of n204 pushes a 50 gr bullet at 4250fps

i might do this instead.........

Depending on the rifle this is going on.  Watch out for pressure!  I think either one might exceed what a Handi can take.  If this is a TC Contender you're OK.

pressures...

yeah, chamber pressure is an issue.....
even though it will handle 30-06, it isnt an apples to apples comparison.

i am just looking for a 'fun' project that is a lil' different.

Why not just go with a weatherby 240?

why not go with a 220 swift?

If you ever wanted to sell it you don't have to find a wildcat guy to buy the gun, any reloader, and even a lowely factory load shooter like me, can by it.

It's not a wildcat, but a 220 swift handi would still be something special.  8)

Or even a 22-250.  NEF chambers them for it now and the 22-250 would clean up the 223 chamber completly.  Don't know, but I think the swift is over the 50K pressure limit of these Handi's.

Another thing to consider, when you start pushing the 4,000 fps barrier you have to find a bullet that will stay together and not blow-up at these velocities.

You might consider one of the Improved Case such as the Ackley Family, with their 40 degree shoulder it absorbs more of the pressure on the shoulder, reducing case stretch . I use a modified version of the 22 CHeetah (22/243) and get 4060 fps with the Sierra 60 gr bullet some of the cases have been reloaded 20 times.Best bang for the buck and dollar would probably be a 22-250 ACK Improved Better velocity and case life than a standard swift.

I haven't read anything of experiments being done with the '06 case necked to 22 cal for a lot of years.  When this was not an uncommon endeavor the results were, AIR, universally poor.  Burning a lot more powder to get up to Swift velocities or very slightly above and burning barrels out in short order.  Much better results were seen by moving up to the 243 bore.

The only really successful '06's to 22 cal I recall were the blown out to nearly straight case, sharp angle around 40 degrees and a barrel with around a one in eight inch twist experimental jobs.  Heavy bullets ranging from high eighty to around 110 grains were used and gave good retained velocities at long range.  Must not have been a real accurate system as I don't recall seeing anything showing up at any benchrest matches.

That big a case would be way overbore capacity and difficult to load for IMO.  If you go that route be ready to spend a lot of time finding loads that shoot well.

Used to be a gunsmith by the name of Jerry Shannon in Spanaway, Wa. that did a lot of work with the '06 case.  He reformed the cases with belts, improved, reshouldered, and just about anything you could think of trying to find the magic answer and, from my conversations with him, had come to the general conclusion that the case was too big for the 22's and marginally acceptable for the 6MM when efficiency and barrel life were considered.  In spite of his misgivings I had a barrel cut for a 22 and eventually swapped it out for a 6MM which was much easier to live with.  The 6 gave better downrange energy and was considerably more accurate than the 22 built on the same case design.  Limited test I know but it has stuck with me.  If you want a fast 22 consider the 22-250 AI. Good case life and easy to load.  Bit overbore capacity and a little inefficient but really easy to take care of the brass IME.
