Dies for 7.62x25 Tokarev?
« on: April 21, 2008, 10:06:47 AM »
I'm going to be needing a set of dies for the above and would like some opinions of brands available.  I've read some 'negatives' on the Lee brand for this particular cartridge.  I do use them for others without complaint, along with RCBS, Hornady & Lyman but I'd like to know what the consensus is for this cartridge.  Redding offers a set too, but they are a little pricey.

Anyone's sizing die
Lyman M-type expander (particularly if you are using lead bullets)
Hornady 30 LUGAR seating die (works great on 7.62x25 too).
Lee Factory Crimp Die

Well, I picked up a set of Lee dies, before I saw Andy's comments, and the Lee seating die seldom seats the bullet straight.  Even with turning the case a half turn before fully seated, it's still canted some.  This was the 'negative' that I had read about elsewhere, and more than once.   Since I don't intend on selling the CZ 52, it looks like this will be a work in progress.  When finances permit, I'll pick up whatever is necessary to make this right.

Czech_two:  get ahold of Ron Reed.  Ron is one of our Moderators, and Sponsors (if you didn't already know).  He also develops and markets a number of different loadings for the 7.62x25mm round.  He might be able to help you determine your next course of action with those dies.  HTH.  Mikey.

I'd take that lee die, clean it well, pull the seater plug and walk outside and throw it as far as you can. You never know when you will be able to use a seater for a project, but the die itself is too hard to turn into anything else and you may as well get rid of it unless you enjoy chasing your tail. Hornady makes a good die as does CH4D, Redding is a bit pricey but good too. Lee, well you get what you pay for. The sizing die should be fine and the powder through expander, calling it okay will be enough, the seat die is pretty much junk. Now if you persist on keeping it, if you'll get a universal expansion die either the Lyman M type or any of the other company's and expand the brass to the point the the neck rides up the inside of the die that should keep it straight fairly well (used that trick in the past) the problem is that you are overworking the heck out of the brass and it will not last as long (cover my butt here since I don't know how long you've loaded, I did not mean to open up the neck to size of the body, just enough so as soon as it enters the part of the die where the neck is; that the expanded brass rides on it 360 degrees) once seated then use the FCD die or go back with the seater die and use it to crimp and size the case back down. With Lee dies and bottleneck cases you MUST do it in two steps, it will cause a lot less headaches.

Regarding the Lyman M expanding dies, I see that they have in 30 cal. a short and long die, also one for the 32 H&R, which should be .308 dia.  RCBS has an expander die in .308 too.  If I can pick your brains here, which would be more suitable for what I want/need to do.

I could use the RCBS for the 30-06, 32-20 and 32 H&R that I load for also, IF it's suitable or one of the Lyman dies if it's not.

Ron, I understand what your saying by "expand the brass to the point the the neck rides up the inside of the die".

I appreciate the feedback, thanks.

Graf & sons carries the lyman M die for 30 mauser / 7.62 tokarev (7342105). I got mine from midway IIRC, but apparently they don't carry it anymore. Lyman may have quit making it. Lock stock & barrel has a "LYMAN 30 CAL PISTOL NECK EXPANDER (M) DIE" (7342092) which apparently has the wrong picture with it.

The hornady 30 LUGER seating die has their sliding alignment sleeve for excellent bullet alignment with the case neck prior to seating. The neck/shoulder dimensions of the 30 luger and 7.62x25 are close enough that it works very well. AFAIK, it is the only seating die with a sliding alignment sleeve that works on 7.62x25.
