Range report-204 Dogtowns
« on: May 26, 2008, 08:06:08 AM »
I went out again today did some shooting all with Midway 34 grain Dogtowns. All the brass was once fired and then neck sized. I used Remington brass and 7 1/2 primers. All the loads were with 27.3 grains of IMR4895. The first group was 7 shots-OAL 2.289. The first 2 shots were spaced out and shot out of a relatively cool barrel. I could see the bullet holes through the scope and was a little disgusted so I just shot the other 5 in rapid succession and there they are all neatly grouped up.

After walking down range and coming back abou 10 minutes had passed and I shot the next group with rounds measuring 2.262. Same thing-2 shots a least a minute between-discusted again and 3 quick shots. Don't know what to think. I seems to shoot better without the barrel being allowed to cool too much. Might be the Dogtowns. Shoul of had some Bergers loaded up but didn't. Anyhow-I'll try again. Dave

are you doing a better job of 'benching' that rifle when you get upset?   are you holding it tighter into the pocket of your shoulder and handling it better?    are you closing up the action with more gumption which may help with the accuracy?

i'd suggest you go with a milder primer with a relatively-fast, single-based propellant like imr-4895, and work up to a heavier load.   that heavier load will give you a greater load density which may help with accuracy.   you aren't getting two groups laid out like a poor ignition problem with your load.    if there was ''vertical stringing'' i wouldn't suggest the milder primer.     why not try a winchester small rifle primer?

i get great results in the .223 with the 7 1/2br remingtons shooting double-based, slower powders.

good luck,

ss'

If you superimpose the two targets over each other you have a 12 shots that are just over 2" center to center.  Most rifles I've seen or shot won't do that!!

These were 17cal  20gr Dogtown's out of a 17 Remington FB Handi, 25.5 gr of AA 2520 and BR4 primers.  Larry

Nice group! I know these Dog Towns can shoot. I've got some more loads put together and hopefully can go out tomorrow morning. Don't expect to do as good as you have but I'm gonna try. Dave ;)
