anyone shoot the ultra varmints in 223 or 22-250?
« on: June 04, 2008, 07:15:55 PM »
Hello, i just have a quick question for all the NEF and H&R guys and ladies out there...does anyone own the 223 24" bull fluted barrel, or the 22-250, and how do they shoot for you, and which factory loads work the best? My father has the 223 and it shoots well...but we would like to see if there is a certain load that you all might have been using that works well. And remember i am talking factory, that i can go buy at a store. I have the 22-250 version, and it started out its life last spring shooting very well...but has done nothing but go downhill since its first firings. It now opens up on firing. and the trigger is horribly hard compared to my dads 223. I believe that the break open upon firing is the reason for bad accuracy. The gun is on its way to H&R for repair as i type this actually. Another issue i ask is how much does a trigger job on these rifles usually cost at a gunsmith? Thanks for any help, and happy hunting and shooting!
Rifles i own:
My Pride and Joy (bury me with it).....
FN Mauser 270 24"
H&R Ultra Varmint 22-250 24" Bull Fluted
Ruger 10/22 20" Match Barrel
Weatherby Vanguard 270 24" Synthetic
Winchester 1200 12ga pump
Bersa 380 thunder
Smith and Wesson 22a

Welcome aboard headache .Take a trip to the wonderful world of FAQ"S every ? you have can be found there and some you ain't even asked yet. Spend a day or 3 there .Unless you have a real problem with the gun your problem is easily fixed at home. If you already sent it in call them and ask them to do the trigger job enless you are looking for less than 3#.But spend some time in the FAQ'S you will learn more than you thought possible about these guns. Again welcome aboard. Kurt

Welcome Headache, and Amen to Kurt.  The FAQs have it all.  Your avatar looks as if your rifle is sitting on my back deck rail.  I've got the exact 300 - 400 yard view.  Mine are maples on the right and spruce on the left.  You'd be at home here!  I'm shooting a standard 22 inch .22-250 Handi with 55 gr. Horndady V-max, and it seems to be working very well, but I'm still experimenting.  I'm using the heavier bullet because of the wind here, and most varmints show up at that tree line, so I want stability and clout when it gets there.  Good shooting.  Pete

"Another issue i ask is how much does a trigger job on these rifles usually cost"

Wasn't from a gunsmith, but by me.  Cost me about 2-2.5 hrs.  Went from 4lb10oz trigger to 2lb7oz, using the instructions in the FAQ - perklo's instructions.

I'll be sending it in for a 223 fluted soon.

Less than $10 if you send it to H&R gunsmiths, $25-$60 just about anywhere else.  ;)
