Cast load data?
« on: June 06, 2008, 10:12:20 AM »
Many of the members here prefer to use hardcast bullets when hunting with a handgun. I have been reloading for about a year now, and have finally decided that I will try some hardcast bullets. I purchased some 240 gr SWC's for my 44 mag ruger redhawk. The problem is, my reloading manual does not list any data for cast bullets. A buddy of mine said I could use the data given for same weight jacketed bullets. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance,
Jim

Maybe, but I recommend not using maximum load   data.  With all things equal the chamber pressures will usually be lower with cast bullets compared to jacketed bullets....but how much of the bullet is inside the case will have an effect.  If the cast bullet's base is deeper in the case that the same weight jacketed bullet's is, then the pressures could be higher with the cast bullet.  Remember that just because the box says 240 grains does not mean that the bullets may actually weigh 254 grains....check their weight yourself.   In general the use of starting or mid-range jacketed loads should be plenty safe with equal weight cast bullets.

Bad Idea.  Whose bullets did you purchase??  Have you contacted them for load data??  Are they Gas Checked??  How hard are they??

I suggest you buy the Lyman manual and read it cover to cover(twice) before you proceed.  The price of a manual is a small price to pay for your safety??  Tom.

Check the powder manufacturer's web site. You'll find data there. There is plenty of load data for the 240gr cast .44 bullets. And yes, your buddy is correct, using the starting loads for the jacketed bullets will work fine with cast. You can adjust your load from there if it is underpowered or leading occurs. Just make sure you ONLY use data published by the powder or bullet manufacturer's.

Buy a Layman Reloading manual. It will have the data you need and alot more info you should know before you start shooting cast bullets. Unless you have bought hard cast gas checked bullets you will get alot of leading befor you get close to max. velocities. Hard cast are good to around 900 fps, depending on how smooth your bore is. Most people shooting cast bullets are running them in the 750 to 900 fps. range and shooting paper with them. Hard cast gas checked bullets will cost you all most as much as jacketed bullets, but for hunting they are worth it.

Thanks for the replies. I will definitely get a lyman loading manual. I also looked at hodgdon's website, and they do show some loads for cast bullets.
