Washing tumbling media?
« on: June 03, 2008, 06:42:59 AM »
A cheapskate friend told me he used Dawn dish washing liquid to wash his corn cob media and that after drying it on screens it worked as well as if new.  I always have used walnut media for polishing brass.  Does anyone know if this washing method will work with walnut media as I am a cheapskate too and always looking for some way to save a little if the end result is the same.  I realize that I would likely have to add a bit of polishing rouge, but just wondered if this would work.  Of course I plan to try it next time my media gets particularly dirty, but just wondered if anyone has already tried it and how it worked for them.

Sounds like a Snipe Hunt to me.  Why don't you tell him you'll pay him half price of new if he'll wash your media for you?

Even if it'll work, your time has got to be worth something.  I mean, doesn't the fridge need cleaning out from behind, or the bottom of the sink need shining, or somethin' really worthwhile?

Use the anti-cling patch's that your wife puts in the dryer with clothes. Cut it up in 1" squares and add a few to the media while tumbling the brass. It will clean the media, that is if your wife buys the product.

Being retired, I have more time than money.  I know that it does not make much sense from an economic standpoint, but neither does reloading if we think we will save money.  Reloading has cost me way more than if I had never started it since I shoot so much more and have such a big wish list of components.  It was just something I thought was interesting and perhaps a new project--would need to build a drying screen, etc.  I have not tried the Downy dryer sheets and guess that will be my next move. ;D

I'm retired too. The anti-static sheets will clean your media and if you have an electronic powder dispenser, you need to wipe it down once in a while with one of the anti-cling sheets. (then cut it up and put it in the tumbler)
At this point in my life, I save a lot of money reloading.  Mainly because while my wife was gainfully employed, I bought large lots of components.  And so I am fixed at least until 2012 when, according to the last Mayan I talked to, the world is gonna end.  :(

I'am to lazy to wash ad dry the walnut media, I just go to the local feed store every 6 or 7 yrs and buy 50lb bag of crushed walnut shell for around $13.00 a bag.

You can get cheap media at any of the major pet stores. Look in the rodent bedding area they have walnut and corn in 3# bags.

While it may "clean" the media I have to question if it would make it work much better.  I suspect that the "rough" edges of the medea have a mild abrasive action that aides in the cleaning. Once that rough edge is worn/smoothed off it would lose some effectiveness.
Just another worthless opinion!!

I think Dakota is correct. I got a bottle of Dillons case polish for a gift years ago.It was "supposed" to regenerate the old walnut media and also put a nice shine on the brass. It still took longer to clean/polish brass then a new batch, and I mean a couple hours longer. I'd turn on the vibrating tumbler and leave it on all night to get clean shiny with the worn out stuff. A new batch would take 2 to 3 hours at most,  to get clean and shiny.

Sometimes you just gotta go dump the old media in the yard and put some new stuff in, with a tablespoon or two of polish..... ::)

You can purchase bulk walnut shell media on eBay.  It is also sold in pet stores that carry bird supplies.  I recently bought 5lb on eBay and the freight was more than the crushed walnut shell.

what he said. Its  to cheap to bother with and your tumbling medial when dirty contains alot of lead and other nasty stuff and i dont think my wife woud appreciate it in her wash machine.
