A GOOD DAY WITH THE 38-55
« on: June 07, 2008, 09:22:31 AM »
I had some to time to kill so off to the range to day
I loaded up some smaller diameter .379 and to my surprise it shot as good as the softer .380 bullets
I so far only tried IMR 3031 26 to 28 grains of powder using 260 grainers both in hard cast and soft cast both shoot excellent and the new trigger pull done by H@R made the gun even sweeter
I think the 38-55 will be with me for a long long time can't waite to take deer with this cal.

Is yours the Target issue or an accessory barrel?  I need to get mine back out to play with it.  Picked up some .379s to load as I couldn't find any .380s on the shelf.  After I try some 379s I will have to get ahold of Montana Bullet Works as he lives in Billings as well, so no shipping to pay and the other bullets I've tryed he made, were very good.  DP.

Tim, when did they improve the barrels?  Mine's a 2006, am I lookin at a larger bore?  Have not picked up the proper stuff to check the bore, CRS (can't remember, uh,stuff) has kicked in and I never think of it when I'm out and about. :D  DP.

All of the 2007 Marlin produced barrels have had decent chambers on them, it was the earlier models that had tight necks that wouldn't chamber a bullet big enough to shoot well in them, they required neck reaming to make good shooters out of them.

Yep, oversize bore and undersize chamber is a bad combination. I did a ream job on the one I had about 10 years ago and could then load .381" bullets. I swapped it to a good friend who still shoots it and loves it but doesn't hunt with it.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.
