I ran into this same problem a while back.  I called Frox Ridge Outfitters / TC Custom Shop and ordered a few of each for both the Contender and Encore - just to have on hand.  Prices were very reasonable.

pipedpoe,
They seem to be 10-32 NF tpi. at least on my 7 TC/U barrel made in the 70's and my 45/70 hunter barrel which i purchased in 1990. i switched out the slot head screws for allen head ones. i bought mine from Newhall Hardware here in Valencia Ca. if you can't find any e-mail me a address and i will send you some. how many do you need?

I just bought a set of forearm screws, stainless steel, hex head, for 80 cents and tax.  Ace Hardware was where I got mine.

Been down this road before on this forum. The contender screws are standard size (#8-32) and available at any hardware store. The Encore on the other hand are #8-40 which is a commercial machine style (found on lots of sewing machines). No one has found a good source for buying these in small quantities at longer than normal length, or if they have they haven't posted it. If you need standard length, you can get them from TC or Brownells, I got a couple from a sewing machine manufacturer (had to get some for a carpet binder and just had them send me 4 extras 2" long). try searching this post for the topic "encore screws" and you'll see we came up with a couple places but none panned out.

Contender screws are #10-32, Never measured the Encore screws so I don't know for sure what they are. They are not std every day size I do know that.  I usually drill out and re-tap my Encores to #10-32 if I need to.  KN
