looking for .445 loads designed for best accuracy...
« on: August 07, 2008, 04:34:12 AM »
I've got a new production (as in built since CZ purchase) .445 super mag with 8" barrel.  I have it scoped with a Leopold 2-8 power scope, which I took off my Smith .460 10.5" hunter.  The Smith would shoot 1" groups at 25 yards, 2-3ish at 50 and around 3-5 at 100.  The 445 is a little over double in all respects. (2.5, 5, 10)  I'm not ready to write it off as the gun, since I was shooting handloads without developing to find the best load.  I had put together 240 grain XTP-Mags with Starline 445 brass (Thanks David), CCI magnum primers and 29 grains of H110 (minnum load listed at Hodgdon, max = 33).

I expect a little more in accuracy dept from the .445 - am I asking for too much, or is it a component (bullet, powder, powder amount) issue?

Thanks,

-Calvin

I don't know about the 445, but my older model 357max with sand bags will get 1" groups at 100 yds.  I've shot a few of the newer CZ's and prior Norwich guns and found them as accurate as my older model and a lot nicer finish.  I use LBT cast bullets that nearly fill the cylinder(the lfn style) these are the most accurate in the max and true tac drivers.

I have limited experience with the lower weight bullets in the .445 (same reason, not great accuracy), but accuracy with the longer heavier bullets is pretty easy to obtain over a wide range of powder choice as well as speed. Now, I'm not sure the model you have so you may be limited to jacketed only but the Sierra 300g and the Hornady 300g are my #1 choice in jacketed with the Nosler 300's a close second. For top accuracy the 320g LeadHead bullets are tough to beat.

The accuracy your are reporting is completely off, if you are not able to better it I'd look at something being wrong with the mounts or gun. (I'm assuming you know how to shoot heavy revolvers from the post)

What base and ringsare you using?  I went with the 4 rings on a base from Weigand, the base is made for the 445.

Next you might want to try a box of ammo from Reeds ammo  http://www.reedsammo.com/, Ron has the best ammo for the .445 and his prices are extremely reasonable.

I'm using the Wiegand base, but with only 2 rings.  I don't think it is the scope setup as I'd had the same thing on my 460 - alhtough I'd like to move to 3/4 ring setup regardless.

Have you checked the space between the barrel and cylinder

Calvin, I shoot almost exclusively Hornady 265gr rifle bullets out of my 445SM with around 32 grains of 296 powder this is at the high side but not above published maximums. I can keep 5 out of six under 6 inches at 200 yards. I have been working loads with vihtavuori N110 using similar loads to H110 and 296 it has much less muzzle blast next will be shooting it through the chronograph.

If I plan on scoping a DW I get the solid rib barrel.  A weaver base for a Marlin 336 can be screwed into the solid base and gives lots of ring options.
Slow heavy bullets work better in the Super Mags.
