Topped off my 375 JDJ with a Leupold.
« on: May 22, 2008, 04:01:43 AM »

I finally found time to mount up the Leupold 2.5-8x scope on my T/C G2 Contender 375 JDJ Custom Shop 14" barrel last night.

Now I need to find time to get to the range....

Good luck at the range!  Let us know how it does and how it KICKS!  I have a 358 JDJ and love it!  It does have a brake on it and it really isn't very bad in the recoil department.  I would say it's comparable to a 44 mag.  So it is relatively tame.  I don't know how it would be without the brake on it.  I'd like to see someone video tape themselves shooting the 375 JDJ offhand to see how bad the recoil is.

Good luck.

I shot the 375 JDJ once before I mounted the scope on it, just to see what it was like.  It certainly will get your attention.

My son was with me at the time and refused my offer of shooting it.

Recoil is gonna be quite stout on this one.

I let my step son shoot my 280 AI Encore several months back.  At the shot, I observed the gun instantly recoiling up, back and completely out of his hand, landing on his shoulder with the barrel pointing backwards before he could get his hand back on the gun.

He calmly handed me back the 280AI, and said "I think I'll go back to shooting my rifle."

I nearly laughed my head off at him.  If I hadn't been closely watching the gun at the shot, I wouldn't have believe it.  It happened quick.

Firing an unbraked .375 JDJ with full-house loads negates the need for morning coffee. This one WILL wake you up in a hurry...

But if you limit your range work to 20 rounds or so per session, you'll do just fine with it and will hardly notice the recoil when a game animal is in your sights.

Thanks for the encouragement.  I've never liked muzzle brakes as a general rule.  In fact I've nearly hated them.  I have had some pretty hard kickers in the past, but never had a brake on any of them.  The hardest recoiling was the Encore 7mm Rem Mag 15" heavy barrel that would really get my attention.

This 375 JDJ is more than that one, so I may learn to like muzzle brakes......

I also know that this one won't get shot as much as some of my other guns, for several reasons, the least of which is recoil.

There are always removeable brakes: on for the 50 rounds at the range and off for the hunt.

I do hate muzzle brakes as I only shot cast lead bullets and they are a pain in the backside to clean after about 50 rounds at the range. To top it off they are loud and you have to wear walkers game ears in the woods when you shoot at game or else you will be hurting your ears ecause so much of the sound hits you in the face and further more they spray you with small particals of unburnt powder or burnt what ever the case may be and then yioou get it in your face eyes and mouth.. I so no no no to muzzle brakes they are really only good for one thing second shot sight acquisition . Bot if you aim good the first time you dont need the second one.

I made it to the gun range this weekend with the 375 JDJ G2 Contender and also took the 280 AI Encore.

I had a good time and shot a few groups, but not a whole lot of shooting.  I was letting the barrels cool good between shots and taking about 15 minutes for 3 rounds.  Between that and the range master calling a brake in the action to let people go down range to check their targets, I didn't get many groups fired.

Here's some pic's of the 375 JDJ targets.

Factory Ammo with 220gr. Hornady bullet.  Velocity of 2291 fps from the un-braked 14" bbl.

Another.

Overall, I am quite pleased with the T/C G2 Contender in 375 JDJ.  While the recoil is quite stout, I had no problems handling it, and have no plans to install a brake on this barrel (I've owned an Encore 15" bbl 7mm Rem Mag that was worse....)

This barrel is plenty accurate and will be used this fall to deer hunt, and possibly an Elk hunt in the future as well.

I also managed to try a few new loads in the 280 AI Encore.  Here's a picture of one of the targets.

I really like both of these guns, and plan on doing some more load development in the future.  I've got some IMR7828SSC that I think will give me more velocity, and, I hope when combined with the Nosler 140 AB, good accuracy.

Regards,

Rog
