I need a .284 round nose bullet...
« on: July 28, 2003, 12:09:22 PM »
Does anybody know of a round nose hunting bullet in .284? I am in the process of building some 7 X 57 MM handloads for a 13 year old boy who has Leukemia who I am treating to a boar hunt... I have some Nosler Partition 160 grain bullets which will do fine, but I have always preferred round nose bullets for close range boar hunting... Sierra 180 grain RN Pro Hunters have served me well in this area, but in looking around, I can't find them made by anybody... No big deal, just thought I would ask...

These pics are of a single shot kill on my last boar a year ago with the Pro Hunter RN bullet in 180 grain out of my .30-06. It was recovered just under the skin on the far side...

Hornady still lists their 175 & 154 gr bullets in a round nose style.

I used their old 139gr flat points with pretty good results in a 708 a few years ago but I haven`t seen them in some time. They were touted at being developed for the 7-30 Waters. They may be just the berries for a young lad if you could find some. The lighter bullet offers less recoil then the heavier slugs and they should have enough wgt for whitetail/ bear at close range in the 7x57.

Hornadies part # for the 154gr  #2835
                                    175gr #2855

the 139 gr FN # 2822 if the number on my old box is still good.

Hope this helps................................... :D

Dave :  Update on the roundnose sierra bullets the sierra poster for 2002 doesnt show it any more., However I ran across a Graf & Sons catalog that still shows them and the Hornadys that ol joe spoke of here is the sierra Tech. # 800-223-8799 and the hornady tech. # 800-338-3220 if graf doesnt have any give tech a call, BTW graff # is order 800-531-2666 and they have a tech. # as well its 573-581-2266, hope it has helped and the part # for the sierra is sra 1950 and you have the hornady # :D   JIM

Thanks for the really fast response everyone... I just checked the midway catalog, and opted for the 154 grain round nose offering... They do have the 174 round nose also, but the 154's will do just fine. Recoil is a consideration with this boy, and this bullet along with a close range shot will do just great. Again, thanks a bunch for the replies... Dave

MidSouth has the 154s on sale at something under $10 a box.

Right, and I thought about that briefly... but I want a bullet that will mushroom at lower velocities more than the solid would...
