Finally some 204 progress!!
« on: June 16, 2008, 05:00:02 PM »
Been playing with my 204 H&R for a while and have not had the best of luck.  Ran into a guy at the range a while back and he told me to try some IMR 4198, I figured I would make this my last attempt.  The 4198 under the 32 grain VMAX has been doing pretty good. I have been to the range three times trying to tweak this load and everytime 23.6 grains looks good.  I had been loading them .005 off the lands and this time I went right at the lands and had this great group of 3 shots with a CC of .35 at 100 yards!!  Thanks for all the tips from all who helped, and a big thanks to Fred for all the usefull links and tips!!

Nice shooting ;) It sure makes you feel good when it all comes together. You can hit those varmints out here a ways now.

I tried the pencil and bullet trick at first and came up with a real long measurement, then smoked a bullet with a candle and had a measurement that was shorter.  So I bought a RCBS tool that has a dummy round and you can find your ogive and then load to that.  I was surprised at where mine was compared to most, and it lines up more with the candle test also.  The RCBS tool also measures the fire formed case head space.

hotburn76 , Thats a nice group, I'm  glad you found what works good for your .204. Sometimes it takes a while to get one to shoot like you want it to. I have found IMR 4198 to be a good powder for the small bore centerfires. If you get a chance ,try some 39 grain Sierra Bzk. bullets, that is a good one to try. Alot of people have good results with those.       Good luck,   Jack
