45 LC Load
« on: June 18, 2008, 01:45:03 PM »
I bought up a bunch of loading supplies from the neighbor and friend of a gentleman who had been loading for 40 + years so I feel I can trust that the load data and loads are accurate.

Here is my question?
I have a TC Contender and one of my barrels is a 10" 45-410.
In the batch of stuff I got was a 50 rd. box of 45 Colt with the following load data on the box

"45 Colt
RP brass
15.0gr. IMR-4227
Federal 210
200gr. lead SWC"

Would this load be safe for my TC?

Thanks,
Mike

Oh! by the way he died from some shooting accident :o

My Hornady 6th edition lists on page 842 a load of 23 gr of  IMR 4227 and a 240 grain XTP as a starting load for a T/C or Ruger. Your load is way below that...

Lyman 48th Edition shows 18.8gr IMR-4227 start / 23.5 max for 200gr JHP in the Contender loads
Speer 10th Edition shows 17.0gr IMR-4227 start / 19.0 max for 200gr JHP in the standard loads

I wasn't able to find any data for 200gr LSWC (or any other 200gr lead bullet) using IMR-4227.
In fact, although I suppose I could have missed one, the only load I saw using IMR-4227 with any lead bullet was:
RCBS Cast Bullet Manual #1, 19.5gr IMR-4227 start / 21.5 max for 225gr LRN

From all indications this is a light load, but if it were me I would pull them if I couldn't find a published load from a reputable source that confirmed it was safe.
