CZ shotguns - which one is better?
« on: May 02, 2008, 06:22:22 AM »
I'm interested in picking up a CZ shotgun.  I'm looking for an entry level one, and I like the Mallard.  The Canvasback has the single selective trigger and the ejectors.  From a real world practical perspective, do ejectors really matter, and is the single selective trigger that big of a deal?  My impression is that they are exactly the same gun other than those features any opinions?

Ejectors or extractors is a personal thing really. On the clays range I really hate ejectors even tho all target guns come with them. If you save hulls having extractors only is a help in saving hulls but then ejectors help in faster reloading if that's a concern. It's really not a deal breaker for me either way.

Single or double trigger again is a real personal thing. I kinda like single selective myself but double gives an instant choice of which barrel to shoot but are more difficult to get used to unless you've used them before. If you have double triggers it is best to have the straight English style stock but not mandatory.

I bought a Mallard for my father-in-law last Christmas. We reload, so extractors mean we don't have to chase cases around on the ground. The double triggers take a bit of getting used to. He had used a 12 ga. Remington 1100 for years, so he had a time for a while retraining himself to reach for the second trigger. The fit and finish were excellent for a gun that was $500 OTD. My only complaint was that the front trigger was a bit heavy, but not a big deal on a shotgun.

I like the gun well enough that I will have one before fall.

I have a Redhead O/U in 20 gauge that I use for skeet and Dove. The gun has performed flawlessly for two years (sometimes it misses a clay pigeon or dove though). I would buy another one of these shotguns. The CZ shotguns are made by Huglu.
