I need to find a dependable hand held GPS unit that is simple to use. It will be used primarily in the woods. Any suggestions ?

The Magellan eXplorist units are in closeout right now.  You could get more unit for your money.  The eXplorist series are very robust and easy to use.
You can get a Magellan eXplorist 500 LE bundled with the MapSend 3D TOPO maps for the US for $160 at TigerGPS right now.
