How Much Shim Can you Add
« on: June 18, 2008, 07:09:31 AM »
Just late last night tried to fit my .308 Handi bbl to a different frame. The frame I had it on was sold as part of a complete gun with the barrel which came on the frame from the factory (.223 bull).
There is now a tapered .010-.012 (not a misprint) gap between the barrel and frame when I try to fit to a different frame. Thing rattles like crazy when you shake it. This is a 2006 frame that was a .270.
The barrel will never be off this frame as this is one of the two Handi's I am keeping and have no plans for further barrels.
Is is safe to shim this much? Why is there so much difference in frames?

Hi Alan, I fit a 223 barrel that had .008 and to make it easy to do used the accuglass with the stainless steel powder in it.It worked great and is still nice and tight 16 months and over 300 rounds later. Also did a 308, but sold it. Give it a try saves allot of fitting using shims.

I used a .026" stainless shim in one to clean up a previous owner's attempt at fitting.  ;)
