? on Ruger OM Blackhawk
« on: June 28, 2008, 04:00:26 PM »
Hi Guys-
I have a question about an OM Blackhawk .357 Mag, 4 5/8"
This is my son`s old gun and he carried it constantly as a guide/packer in Wyoming for many years, and it looks bad, but is still tight.
The blueing is about gone and the ejector rod is worn from holster wear.
I understand the Ruger will still install the conversion kit to allow safe carry of 6 rounds? How do I get this done? And if while back at Ruger, will they re-blue it and replace any worn parts? I know it will cost $$$ if they will do it.
Any ideas on this?

Thanks,
ArkyJack

I was told the conversion was free, I assume whatever parts necessary to make that happen and put it within specs would go along with it. Just call Ruger and they will tell you what to do. They told me they wont work on an old model without doing the conversion.

You have to return the gun to Ruger for the conversion, which is performed at no charge.  Be certain to specify that you want the old parts returned with the gun.

I have attached a link to Ruger's factory service price list, so you can get an idea what they're likely to charge you.

I have 4 of the old 3 screw Rugers and none have the transfer bar. Personally I won`t have one changed over. I can get by with 5 round and just want mine the way they came from the factory. But that`s just me.

I wouldn't send it in as it'll get the conversion regardless if you want it done or not and they do NOT return the parts now.  A reblue from the factory is actually a decent price - $35 or so but figure in shipping cocsts and you might as well have it done locally.  Of course the refinish will remove the collectability so the conversion become moot then.  I gotta wonder though, if it was safely carried all that time why it is so importnat to have the conversion now?

Thanks to all who answered my ?
It is not imperative that the conversion be installed, as I am perfectly happy to load only 5. As for the refinishing, it is only cosmetic, as the honest use marks are just showing "Been there - Done that".
The gun still shoots good, and is fairly tight, so I think I will leave well enough alone. Especially if the old parts would not be returned!
I may look for a NM with a 6.5" bbl.

Thanks again,

I had a 44mag vaquero that i stupidly left under my bed in its case and rusted completely they replaced the bbl ,ejector rod housing ,re blued the grip frame and re did the case hardend finish free of charge other than the shipping i was really surprised because i expected to pay quite a bit. their customer service is beyond compare in my experience. superdown
