OT (a little) but I think this is worth it
« on: June 21, 2008, 04:32:41 PM »
Am on my vacation, currently in NYC, nice place to visit.....but it DOES have history.  Anyway, I took this pic and thought I'd share it with friends.

This Lady is what it's all about.

How ironic!
My grand daughter is on a class trip from Oregon, visiting D.C., Pennsylvania & NY and one of their tours today was to visit the Grand Lady in your picture.
Tonight they are scheduled to look out over the city from the Empire State Building.
Can you imagine the thoughts of a little girl from Coos Bay, Oregon after visiting the big city?

Thanks for sharing the photo.

She still is a grand lady!  I can relate to your granddaughter, went there and Washington DC on my class trip 37 years ago.  Just a little ole farm boy from Iowa.  The lady does give you pause, and a great picture to show her!  Back then we could still go up to the torch, don't think you can now.  This picture reminds me of why I did 6 years active in the Army and why I still get a lump in my throat when I hear the Star Bangle Banner.  DP.

Sorry for the post n Run, but been busy all day.  We went to the Lady's feet today, but didn't have acess to go up.  That's OK a lot of steps.

We went to the Empire State Building yesterday also, but not at night.  Took us a couple hours just to get up to the first viewpoint on the 86th floor, we then went to the 102nd.  The view wasn't quite as good up there, but a LOT less people.

It's amazing how far you can see from 86 floors up.

This has been one BUSY vacation.

Started off, flying to Detroit Mich, met with wifes aunt and uncle, for a few days.  Drove with them to Niagra Falls, Ontario, stayed there for three nights, then took a train to NYC.  We leave here Tues AM for another train trip to Boston, to visit my son who's a sports writer for the Taunton Gazzette.  gonna spend a few days with him, then HOME!  Then I'm not going anywhere for a few weeks.

We have been one one excursion after another since leaving CA.  I'm tired.

Oh, yea, visited ground zero.  No tears, but VERY humbling, seeing all those buildings that were in the news.  Can still easily picture those plane flights in the videos.  Very, very sad.

One NY tour guide made it VERY clear on his tour, "We have no problem understanding who our enemies are.  We do not forgive or forget".  This guy was VERY UN-PC.  My kind of tour guide :).

I have taken Soooooo many pics on this trip.  bought a new Nikon S600 Coolpix camera for the trip with 4GB memory card.  That was what the Liberty pic was taken with.  Got tons of pics of Ellis Island today, and more of lady Liberty, from her feet.

In 2 days, I took 257pics.  That's been about average.

As much as I hate cities and large crowds, I do think it's a worthwhile tour to visit this city.  Too much history to not see.

It's kind of ironic, but my wife is also on a trip to the East Coast (from Wyoming). She teaches fifth graders and as part of a grant she gets to see all the places about which she teaches. She also spends some time in a classroom at a college in Boston, but she's taking some time Monday night to go to a Red Sox game. She flew into Boston today, will spend some time in NYC, then she'll be home on Saturday.

Funny...when she's gone I seem to get more range time.

This IS a small world.  Writing from Boston, myself tonight.  Last leg of this trip. here for 3 days, then home.  Visiting my son here.  Very nice city, took my son, his girlfriend, and my wife to dinner at joe's Seafood, and watched a nasty thunderstorm outside in the harbor.

Yesterday we took bicycle rikshaw tours of Central Park NY.  Saw some interesting spots, including the twin towers the Gargoils were on in the movie "Ghostbusters"

Then this building you see a bronze doorway about halfway down.

In 1980, John Lennon was standing in front of this, signing autographs, when he was murdered.

Not historical, sorta, but interesting, non the less.

Glad you guys are enjoying the post.
