Remove importer marks?
« on: November 12, 2006, 11:32:58 AM »
Hey guys,
I have a Yugo 24/47 that I'm reconditioning. I have a little work to do to the outside surface of the barrel, before bluing, and I was thinking of removing the importer marks that CAI put in the barrel. Does anyone know if this is allowed or not? The serial number is clear and legible and of course, will be left alone. I think it will look so much nicer, when finished, to not have the "C.A.I Georgia Vt." in the final blue. Don't want to break any laws, though.

Nope...not supposed to remove.

I heard that somebody filled with body putty and then painted the metal on their rifle though.

That would be St George, Vt
I know what you mean I hate those marks. Some are worse than others.
I have heard that removal is a no no to the Feds.

I have so far found nothing definitive on this.
As most importer marks I have seen are on the barrel,
If it were illegal to remove the mark, would this also make barrel replacement
illegal ? As the receiver is normally the most regulated part of a firearm,
The mark should be on the receiver I would think. Another Vague aspect of gun ownership I guess. ???

Thanks for all of the replies. S.Sumner, good point, I hadn't thought of that.
I think that when I work on the barrel, I may slightly work down the marks, leaving just enough to be legible, but not as noticable as they are now. Maybe when blued over, they'll be hidden nicely. Might as well err on the safe side, especially when dealing with the ATF!

Actually one of the obscure rules - must show country of origin - hence, import mark.

An import stamp needs to be on the action - otherwise it is not a permanent mark, as S. Sumner opined regarding re-barrelling.  As for dealing with the importer's stamp - mix up some bedding compound to match the finish and use that to cover the markings, then steel woll it to match the barrel contour.  I used that on a Winchester 94 I installed a full length mag tube on - needed to fill in some barrel cuts and it worked great.  Cannot tell the difference unless you look very hard and in bright light.  Mikey.
