Barrel Length?
« on: July 11, 2008, 05:02:13 AM »
As I was cleaning (fondling) my 44 Mag Ruger SBH last night.  It struck me when looking at the parts lying there that the barrel was 5.5" but the cylinder was probably about 1.7" long (didn't measure it).  Anyway why isn't it considered to have 7.2" (base of the cartridge to the muzzle) of barrel instead of 5.5"?  TC Encores and Handi-Rifles barrels and most other styles are measured from the base of the cartridge to the muzzle as the "barrel length".  Seems like this would matter in "ballistic calculations" such in the current software.

Not sure why Mike , other than the fact that the revolver has a gap between the Cylinder and the barrel , making it 2 diffrent parts , were as most rifles and auto loading pistols combine the chamber & barrel in one piece .

Basically, the length of the barrel is the barrel length.  With rifles and pistols that includes the chamber but a cylinder is no part of the barrel so it doesn't count for revolvers.
