.30-06 Ammo From The CMP
« on: May 07, 2008, 03:39:25 PM »

This is what you get from the CMP. 1,440 Rounds of .,30-06 M-2 Ball 150 Gr. Ammo. All of it is clean, well packaged, and nice and shiny. I'll report on it's accuracy later, when I get a chance to do some testing. So far, so good. Excellent price on this stuff. It comes out to $5.29 @ box of 20 delivered Fed Ex Priority. They have had a slight price increase, and imposed a 10 case limit per year, per customer. If your looking for cheap .30-06, It doesn't come any better than this.  Bill T.

Bill - Greek ammo is good stuff.  It is reloadable and the brass is strong.  You should have a lot of good shootin' with that.  Nice find.  Mikey.

I just got back from the range and capped off 4 boxes of this stuff. Man, it's nice to shoot a round with some authority after all of the .223 I've been shooting lately! Even the wife enjoyed the increased power level. Anyway, this stuff is very accurate in all of my bolt guns. The Weatherby was the best, constantly grouping under 1" at 100 yards. The Ruger Mark II Stainless didn't like it much, but I expected that. That gun complains about most everything it's fed. The Browning A-Bolt Medallion Grade came in a close second, with only 2 of the 5, shot groups opening up to just under 2". I'll be buying more of this stuff, as it's excellent ammo, and loaded stiff. I had zero extraction or ejection problems with it. Makes the .223 feel like a woman's varminter!  Bill T.

Ive shoot HXP ammo in 30-06 and .303 calibres. All great stuff. The .303 has the best brass for reloading of any I have found. the 06 is top flight also.

???  First time I have ever heard anything bad about Greek ammo, and I've used a lot of the 303 as well as the 30 cal. in 1917's, 03's and Garands.  Are you sure you're not thinking of the Korean stuff?

I heard the same thing about the Greek ammo when I bought my case a few weeks back.  Something about the glue used for the 20rd boxes causing some corrosion that caused sticky extraction or something - I never did get a good understanding of what was supposed to have been happening, but it was only the boxed stuff that was suspect.  So I bought a case of the clip + bandoleer stuff, just to be safe.

Will military ammo damage commercial rifle barrels?  I understand that this stuff has a steel core, with a jacket over it.  Is that true?

I once tried some military surplus 308 ammo in a Browning A-Bolt and had to hammer the bolt open.

Some suprlus ammo has corrosive primers and the residue will damage or rust the chamber and crown if you do not clean up after using the stuff.

There is nothing wrong with shooting steel core ammo as long as it has a brass or copper jacket - it is only the jacket that touches the bore and rifling.....

However, regarding the 308/7.62x51mm - the external dimentions are the same but you may have gotten some stuff that, for some reason, ran a higher pressure.

You have to be careful using some surplus in your hunting rifles - external dimentions may be the same but sometimes pressures vary, althought he 308 is a higher pressure round than its military twin.  HTH.  Mikey.

No, the Greek .30-06 ammo I purchased is totally non corrosive, boxer primed, brass case ammunition. It has a lead core, with a mild steel jacket that is Copper plated to prevent any rust. Steel jacketed bullets will not damage your barrel. This has been proven in endless military trials against Cupro Nickel jacketed ammo. Don't confuse steel jacketed ammunition with steel core ammunition. Both will attract a magnet, and this is where many people get confused. The Army is far more concerned about undo barrel wear than the sportsman is. They have far more barrels to replace.  Bill T.
