Winchester 1892 Question?
« on: September 11, 2008, 08:01:28 AM »
I am a big 1892 fan. owning a few myself, but my question is about the carbine versions. I recently have been looking at some carbines on the internet and i noticed that some do not have the barrel band at the front sight and some do.  i comparing on saddle ring carbines with the 20" barrel .I thought it might have been the older carbines that didnt put the bands there, but when i started looking i noticed that one made in 1924 didnt have the barrel band but one made in 1911 did? any help?

The way I understand it carbines don't have the barrel bands at the front sights but the trappers do, but I could be wrong. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in.

the way I understood it was there were the 92 rifles...no barrel bands...and what they are calling "short rifles"...also with no barrel bands, built like the rifles only shorter. (heavy barrels)   Which leaves the carbines with the barrel bands. Carbines may have had slimmer barrels, not sure about the originals, but this is what the replica's seem to be like.

My '92 SRC (DOB 1929) in .44-40 has the barrel band just behind the front sight ramp. I was shooting it just this afternoon. It still shoots great, in fact it outshoots  its Browning counterpart in .44 Mag by a wide margin. I need to work on my loads for the browning.

In fact I might even start a thread in the reloading forum.
