New stock for 88?
« on: October 30, 2008, 04:22:16 AM »
I fell and broke the stock on my .308 88 while moose hunting this year.  I had the stock repaired at the local gunsmith, and while he did a nice job, I can see the lines where it was broken.  Makes me want to cry.
I've been lookin all over, and am having a tough time finding a replacement stock.  The rifle was built in 54, so I need an old model stock.  Any suggestions?

Try gunbroker.com,  or gunparts corp of West Hurley NY (formerly Numrich Arms). The Win. 88 is not a rifle that people had restocked. Thus, you're not likely to find an original stock at your local gunsmith.  You may be able to find an aftermarket stock made of synthetic. You may also try some generalized internet searches under gunstocks, replacement stocks, synthetic stocks, original stocks, win 88 stocks, etc.

Try Bobs at: http://www.gun-parts.com/winchesterstocks/

He has model 88 stocks, new and old model with a serial number break or change point.

I have a laminate stock from Boyd's on 1955 model 88.  Boyd's also has walnut and various color laminations available.  The stocks are left "proud" and need to have quite a bit of wood taken off.  The laminated wood is definitely heavier than the original walnut.

Midwest Gun Stocks out of Iowa makes rough stocks, take some work but I have had much worse.  Their prices are great IMHO and the product well worth the price.

Think the have a basic web site, have not looked for a couple years.

I buy stocks off ebay all the time.
