Range Report - 44 Mag
« on: July 07, 2008, 11:06:38 AM »
Hi,

A few months ago, I placed a WTB for a 44 mag rifle.  I got a very nice reply from Richard Harder and we made a deal.  I had heard that there were a few accuracy problems with some 44 mag rifles.  My wife finally moved her horse out of my pistol range and I tried out the rifle.

I had a spare Tasco Bantam scope in 2.5X.  I fired from the 25 yd line to sight in the scope.  One ragged hole.  OK, that was good.  I moved to the 50 yd line (the fartherest I have on my place) and fired three shots - one ragged triangular hole.  OK, that was a fluke.  I fired a total of five 3-shot groups and all were the same - one ragged triangular hole.

To say I was pleased is an understatement.  I was ecstatic.  This is going to be my feral pig rifle.  Most of my shots will be under 75 yds so I think if I do my job, the rifle will be just fine.  Here piggy, piggy, piggy.......................

Shanner, I bought the entire rifle.  I'm using Win 240 JSP ammo.  It also eats 44 specials really well.

i've been wanting to try a 44 mag , saw one in Gander Mountain the other day , but i was kind of worried about the accuracy issue i've heard others talk about on this forum.

That's on older 44mags, any made 2007 or later since Marlin started making the barrels have been great shooters.  ;)

I still have the older model that I can't really get to shoot worth beans yet.  I got disgusted and gave up for a while but I just dug it back out and am getting ready to try some new things with.  I hope to get sme decent groups out of that thing yet! :D  On the other hand, if after trying to make this work and it still dosn't want to cooperate, I'll part ways with it.  Life is too short and powder, lead, and primers are too expensive!

Glad yours is a shooter,

Wolfgang

Midwayraider,

I would think by the serial number you could tell the date of manufacture.  Somewhere in the FAQ's section there is a list of serial numbers and dates.  I would throw this one to Quick as he is a wealth of information on these matters. ;D  I just know that if I had it to do over again I would have waited and taken the time for H&R/Marlin to get it right and not gotten one that was overbored.  Now it is a game to see if I can come up with a combination that the gun will like.  I am planning on opening up a mould a little to throw an oversize cast bullet and I have loaded up several rounds to try that I wrapped up to .435" with teflon tape.  We'll see.... ::)

You want a serial number prefix of HX, NX, HY or NY, that would be 2007 or 2008. Marlin started making barrels in early 2007,  it's possible to get an earlier 2007 model that's overbore since H&R may have had barrels left from the previous batch, but if you get one made in 2008 or and accessory barrel now, you got it made!! ;)
